>The cabin was an enormous structure, measuring 206 feet long (62m), 102 feet wide (31m), and 72 feet high (22 meters, approximately 7 stories). A full million board feet of lumber went into it.

>Its construction was said to have cost approximately $30,000 (about $950,00 today).

>Most of the giant logs used in the building were selected and purchased from old-growth trees in Columbia County, Oregon, by the American lumber baron and philanthropist Simon Benson.

What I find the most amazing part of stories like this is the fact that all those trees were cut down with buck saws and a axe no modern day chain saws and hauled out of the woods with teams of horses .

Or steam engine tractors either way it was a major undertaking !

This.

I live in New England , there are miles and miles of stone wall here. Must have taken generations of farmers and their beasts of burden. Huge amount of back breaking work.

I constantly think of that when I see the stone walls here.

I'm sure some Canadians are going to disagree.

Impressive, but there is no way you would build it for only $950K today.

The testosterone, strength and endurance levels of the average man then far exceeded what they are today.

Today? No

But that is what it cost if adjusted for inflation.

Alan, not horses, bull teams were the power on the coast. 1905 could have been steam, kind of a transitional time frame.

I had wondered about that , I do know for a fact that my Grandfather and Great Grandfather skid logs out with a team of horses in the Colville Wash area there were logs they couldn't move ! Those logs were skidded out in the last 25 years from what I learned from my cousins there .

Sometime I hope to figure out how to post pictures on here and that will be some of the first I'll post !
