I’m headed to Ontario in 2.5 weeks to bear hunt. It will be stand over bait type operation. I’m looking for some bonus attractive and bait so I set my stand off from others😜. Got any suggestions, tips or pointers? I’ve been looking at bear attractants but there is so many to choose from. Prefer a business that is trapper friendly. Thank you!

If you are going with an outfitter why would you need to bring attraction baits or lures. They should have done everything you need to hunt with. Plus check the regulations on what you can bring across the boarder for bait. You can bring bonus lures but really wouldn't need much I would think. Maybe strong fruit smelling stuff being berries will be getting ready soon.

I'm a retired outfitter and, more to the point, I've been on a fair number of outfitted/guided hunts. One of the most important things I've learned is: "Do not try to guide the guide...!"

If you trust the outfitter enough to pay him a fee, why not trust him to put you on the right bait with the right bait (and attractants?)

Are you using an outfitter or freelancing it? We stayed in a cabin (paid for) but hunted on our own, got my firsy bear that way but that was in 1976 so I don't know how much changed since then. If you are with and outfitter then you might mess yourself up by trying to change bait location, if your on your own that's different, I like calling and have had it work on several bears spring and fall

Caramel corn and cheese corn. Buy bags of it and sprinkle around.

I hope it's a meat hunt. August bears have weak coats. Mid Sept. before they even become decent.

Check out bernie b's bear hunts out of Minnesota he has quite few videos out and talks about different types of bait think he's got a pretty successful guide business.

My good buddy runs a camp on nw Ontario. Been going there since 1983. If baits are run a d kept fresh "Do Not" mess with the bait that has been working. Never change it up without talking to your guide.
Been hunting bears in Canada and WI since 1974. As stated do not guide the guide.

What do you do to call a bear in? any particular weather or time of year? We can only fall hunt bear and it is all dense second growth woods for 95% + of our public land

I’m a big believer in consistency kills big bears. Throwing some random scent out will put them on high alert

If you did your homework and hired a good guide, sit where he tells you and let him do the baiting. That’s what you hired him to do! Everything about bear hunting is being consistent. Do not introduce anything new and expect it to increase short term success!

I agree with what some others have said about not bringing In your own bait or attractant. The outfitter should have a bait site well baited and active
You walking around spraying stuff and introducing new things will likely lower your odds at shooting a bear.

I do have a question for you. What is your plan for the fur if you do shoot one?

The fur is poor quality in August. If you’re hoping for a nice bear rug or a mount, I’d strongly suggest you find somewhere that offers a Spring bear hunt.

Ontario would be one of the last Provinces’s I’d go for Bear.
