In 1954, Marilyn Monroe accompanied her husband, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio, to Japan during his coaching tour. While there, she took time to visit American troops recovering from wounds sustained in the Korean War, bringing a touch of brightness and glamour to their hospital rooms.

One especially moving moment from the visit shows Marilyn greeting a soldier who was healing due to a broken back. He could feel her presence—a tender, bittersweet encounter. Monroe crouched by his bedside, smiling and speaking gently, offering comfort and connection in his moment of vulnerability.

Her visit was part of the long-standing USO tradition, where stars lifted the spirits of service members far from home. Though her appearances were brief, Monroe’s warmth left a lasting impression, proving that even icons could offer deep, human comfort when it mattered most.

And this GI isn't looking at her eyes. Can't blame him.
