My sister wanted me to make a call for a friend in New York. They were on a group trip to Italy and found out this guy hunts ducks, so....

It's from a nice stick of bird's eye maple my brother sent me years ago and some ebony with an acrylic toneboard. Sounds like a duck too.

Also had our annual hunters lunch a couple weeks back. We had around 100 people for a great lunch with red deer steaks and all kinds of other stuff, plus the usual fermented grape juice they like here. You can tell the guy in the red shirt is telling a fishing story.

And one picture of my recent trip about 3 hours south of here on the Mediterranean to fish for tuna with a hunting friend, (the guy in the red shirt). No tuna for us, but we got lots of mackerel. Two days after I left he got two tuna around 120-130 pounds.

All from the eastern front.

There are bluefin and albacore. The fishing is in decline like lots of places and strictly regulated.

If that call was mine it would not go out of the house-----especially on good rainy duck weather. Beautiful work there.....jk

jk....

For years now I use a super glue finish on the calls. & or 8 layers and then you polish it down til it looks like glass. I've had guys tell me the ebony finished like that looks like black plastic. They can take whatever nature dishes out for years.

Unfortunately for box calls, a durable finish lilke marine varnish kills the sound to some extent, so the acrylic spray varnish helps protect them without losing sound, but a few drizzly turkey hunts will leave some spots on the wood.

Now back to the checkering on my stock. The mallard call was a nice break.

Thats pretty nice looking work.
I have several custom calls that were made for me by my brother in law.
I don't intentionally abuse any of them. I do consider all my calls working calls. Don't have any just in box on wall like some of his customers.

Mac...

30 years ago I bought a reelfoot style call from a good call maker. He asked me if I was going to hunt with it or was I a collector? I told him it was for hunting. He laughed and said if it was for a collector he didn't need to drill a hole in it.

We had a good laugh.
