Most of the interbreeding going on is NOT occurring in areas where there are well established populations of both species. It generally occurs when individuals of one species disperses beyond the range of its species. If they are too far from home when mating season comes in, they will breed with whatever canine that will hold still.
The DNA studies are not finding 50-50 wolf/coyote hybrids everywhere. They are finding trace amounts of foreign DNA present indicating that somewhere in their family tree, a behind the woodpile incident occurred.

What if it's a male wolf and female coyote?

Same deal, they’re in competition. When the carrying capacity of the land and their populations are a bit lower, they might tolerate each other a little more. But when the predator numbers are high and the foods getting scarce, it’s a hot war and the coyotes are on the losing end and get pushed into little zones. Even there they have to watch out.

So Reaperman, if there’s evidence of these pups causing problems, what can you do about it? Can you get a permit to go after them? DNR gets a guy out there to target them or what? I know in the RM of Piney which is the southeast corner of Manitoba, they often deal with it themselves instead of going through Manitoba Ag…..but they not protected here. Just classified as a big game animal.
