BC started a thread a couple weeks ago about tipping. Last night I talked to a waitress about that. If they get cash tips it is tax free. She got a nice cash tip. If it's added to the credit card it is taxed. If no tip is received her employer deducts 12% from her check for not doing a good job. Cash all the way!
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

sounds like bs to get her to say she got tips so he can report it and just deducts the tax off her card tips and she doesn't notice it or understand how it works. The 12 % deduction is just him putting in she got a tip that size and taking it off the card charged tips is my guess

Technically cash tips are supposed to be reported to the IRS by the server
I don't have a problem if they don't

I give cash so they don’t have to report it but if they want to they can go for it.

If they chose not to report the cash tips then they lower their SS for retirement. If they are in the lower income brackets as many state they are then the percent of their earnings for SS stipened is higher for the lower income and thus it hurts more then if they were making larger amounts of money. I think it is really head scratching that a customer has to pay the majority of the salary for an employee that someone else hires. If they don't have to pay taxes on those tips then they are getting a 12-22% raise which is a fairlly hefty raise.
Bryce The amount that most people get in tips ain't gonna change their social security. 12 to 22 percent raise on minimum wage ain't a lot of money. Pay cash and dont report it. After all one black democrap representative owns over 1 million in back taxes he refuses to pay. AOC owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in school loans she wants you to pay for. A few thousand by a waitress or waiter ain't gonna hunt anything!

Little bit of a tip story. A restaurant I have went to a few times because I don't eat out a lot. Their food can be very good or average. When its good its good. I had an issue with a waitress charging extra on a bill with out telling me because my wife and I split appetizer and dinner. I was not pleased and did not tip her. Went there again last week and she recognized me so she dumped me off to a newer waitress. The newer waitress did a great job and the tip reflected that. I hope the nasty one found out. Either way I feel like they both got what they deserved. Tipping should be subjective depending on service. I always try to tip in cash but I usually check with the waitress to see what they prefer. Sometimes cash matters ,sometimes not. Wonder if the menu stated that you would be charged for sharing, lots of places do that and it is not the servers just adding a charge for fun.

You are supposed to claim all income to pay taxes on it. At the end of the night you have a sales report. If the company / restaurant expects that you should have made 20% they may report 20% of your sales for you. (prob a set number for that place for a given time frame)
Typically at the end of the shift there was a place to write down your tips so they could be reported / taxed.
Of course all credit card tips are on the report. Typically credit card tips cover the 20% and you don't have to report your cash.
Depending on where you work you server may have to tip their support staff. i.e. the bartender that doesn't get tables but makes your drinks gets a cut. Usually a % of bar sales on that same report.
I'm not sure how the Trump tip free laws work... i imagine you are still supposed to claim all of your income and its just taxed lower somehow. I think you're supposed to be able to deduct tips up to 25000 off your income
