A few years ago I read a post about yellowjackets on here. Some had a concoction that they mixed with meat and the yellowjackets took it back and it killed the whole nest? What was it they mixed with the meat?

I need to pay attention this time ......

Taurus SC it's got fipronil as the main ingredient
Mixed with Swanson brand canned chicken. Not sure how much. I'll look it up later if no one chimes in

12 oz can of chicken
pour the liquid in a separate container
mix 1/4 teaspoon of a 8- 9% fipronil based insecticide in the liquid and stir well
pour the liquid back into the can of chicken and mix very well
let the product sit for 1-3 hours then put your baits out
This makes about 5-6 nice sized baits
Bottom 2" of a plastic water bottle makes a good bait holder
place baits in a live trap or some wire cage so mammals cannot disturb the bait and yellowjackets can fly in and out

That bait works like a charm.

Scuba , the nice German guy who used to be on here, sent me some of his Taurus , as he had plenty.

It only takes a little bit . He said if you use too much , it will kill the hornets right away before they have a chance to take some back to the nest and feed it to their grubs and queen.

Someone must be using it too close by, because there hasn't been one yellow jacket or even a baldie in sight the whole summer so far.

But lots of honey bees. I was told by a neighbor, that another neighbor down the road, has been getting into bee keeping. I bet they are using that bait for the hornets.

After repeated usage for 2-3 seasons this method reduces the overall population in your whole area.

This bait and technique are so effective it is quite likely that the lack of yellowjackets are a long-term result of your efforts.

What you are seeing is a normal result imo.

Thank you, PWC, for your info. That makes sense. I'm so glad I haven't had any worries this summer. I am allergic to hornet stings in a moderate degree.

And who wants to be outside and try to enjoy a picnic or BBQ with those things ambushing you for your food ?

I use tuna as the base and it works great too. I need to do it soon before the fruit ripens.

Paper wasps can be nasty too. Just killed several nests under the eves of the house. Unlike a honey bee they can sting you repeatedly same as yellowjackets.

You need to be very careful using products with fipronil. It is a contact transfer pesticide and should not be used by those not educated in its use and effects.

If used, it should be "site nest specific " and not just placed out as a draw station for any visitors. Such use can cause unwanted consequences and penalties if caught using it off label.

You don't need the uber strong stuff.

Frisky's whitefish and sardine from Bimart, added 1/2 CC of Taurus SC with 9.1 % Fipronil.
If you are using it to kill a nest of yellow jacket equipment do not get any on your beekeeping gear or gloves. You will wipe out an entire apiary! Don't ask me how I know.
