So, how do you trap them? Can you make a trap and how?

Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

Unfortunately, we can’t trap them here in Illinois.. we can only use hook and line, dip nets, or bow and arrow.
Traps would be more selective than a hook that gets lodged in its guts… I do know that some hooks dissolve over time… but I’m sure there is a degree of difficulty for the turtle.
We also can’t legally keep any snapping turtles that’s caught before June 15. Sooo, if I have a turtle on my trot lines, that’s swallowed a hook,, I can’t keep it… I have to release it. Weather or not I think it’s going to survive or not

You can fish for them or you can trap them. Trapping is the best way to get them because you don't have to worry about undersize or non target species. And you can catch multiples in one trap .

Net traps are the most common but you can make wire mesh traps

I have retired from commercial snapping turtle trapping. Snappering bigtime is hard, physical work, and my state will not allow a "helper" to touch a turtle or traps. At 73, with both hips replaced a man has to know his limitations.
Here are 3 pics from the past.

Good looking mess of turtles.

I really need to get serious about trapping a few or 50.

Just gotta find some decent traps.
