Store won't stay where they can't make a proffit. My guess is to much merchandise walking out the door not being paid for in certain areas. Next the same people will be crying about being in a food desert and not make a connection. Yep!! Minimum wages are high there and to much theft and margins aren't good.

You ever thought of Dollar General as a mini-Walmart? I call DGs the yellow WalMarts. poverty mart they intentionally sell things that are a worse deal but at a quantity that makes a price point. they intentionally seek populations that will buy from them. we have 2 here the old store almost directly across from the trailer park and the new one they put on the other side of town town is 1 1/2 miles corner to corner , they know they want to be walking distance from the trailer park. and a family dollar set up next door from the old DG by the trailer park helping to keep people living paycheck to paycheck , one bad deal at a time.

Rite Aid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy multiple times, with the most recent filing occurring in May 2025. The pharmacy chain has faced significant challenges, including mounting debt, declining sales due to increased competition from larger chains like CVS and Walgreens, and hundreds of lawsuits related to its role in the opioid crisis. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, Rite Aid has been undertaking a major restructuring effort, including: Significant Store Closures: Rite Aid has closed hundreds of stores since its initial bankruptcy filing in 2023, reducing its footprint from over 2,284 locations to approximately 1,245 before the most recent filing. Further closures are planned or have already taken place in 2025, according to Newsweek. Debt Reduction: The restructuring efforts have aimed to significantly reduce Rite Aid's substantial debt burden. The first bankruptcy successfully cut approximately $2 billion in debt. The recent filing is also expected to involve further debt reduction. Asset Sales: Rite Aid has been selling off assets, including its pharmacy benefit company Elixir, and is selling or closing its remaining locations. These assets are being acquired by other companies, including CVS, Walgreens, and others. Operating as a Private Company: Following its emergence from the first bankruptcy in September 2024, Rite Aid operated as a private company owned by its lenders. Impact of the bankruptcy For Customers: While Rite Aid aims to ensure uninterrupted pharmacy services during the restructuring, customers should be aware that their prescription records may be transferred to other pharmacies as stores close or are sold. Rite Aid has also stopped issuing customer rewards points. For Employees: The bankruptcy has unfortunately led to job cuts, particularly in corporate and administrative roles.

Stores closing is just a symptom of bigger problem, which is the lawless, anything goes culture that is life in the hood. Don't hear much about it these days, but quick search indicates there were 25 people shot and 2 murders in Chicago just last week alone. It was bad before George Floyd fiasco, but they took the brakes off after that and now thugs are running wild and unchecked. About all civil authority seems interested in is blaming others and getting previous night's damage swept up off the streets before it gets dark and carnage starts all over again.
To stay open, a store would have to implement security and take the blame when rules enforced. Since there is little to no profit possible, far easier just to abandon the place and walk away. Thugs reap what they sow, but never seem to learn that lesson.
Going to be interesting to see how Trump bunch handles the thugs in DC, following beat down of Big Balls. Are they willing to do what needs to be done?

Sometimes it’s tough to buy local when things cost twice as much locally it just is. Ridiculous prices and attitudes are often the death of small businesses also. Local merchants live very well here they ain’t living in apartments with other folks they have the best houses in town often. Many businesses own several businesses so they are not that different just the same approach on a smaller scale. I shop local mostly but big projects I just can’t do it 10 overpriced items costing twice as much is crazy.

Theres families here that shop other places because they can’t be competitive if the bought from their own family businesses.

That’s everywhere now it’s tough buying US goods the prices on well made imported stuff is still high but often lack quality. I replaced a Moan kitchen faucet with a new Moan faucet I took out a 3 pound unit and put in one weighing half as much junk. Rubber boots are expensive now most are cheap junk.

I think all this started with AMAZON , cheap prices at first with free shipping, now higher member price per year, and prices are twice as much. Was easier to buy from them than buy at a local store. Walmart followed the same plan. CVS left my town last year, Family Dollar the same. We have three Autoparts stores , all different! I have a hard time understanding a small town with 3 Autoparts stores and 4 pizza shops , one laundry mat, 3 gas stations , one bar part time . Post office can't deliver on time anymore. Produce stands everywhere, yet they don't grow their produce. Things are very different than they were just 10 years ago. Never understood why a store or fast food business , would close, and the new owner tears down the old store, rebuilds a new store almost the same .Tax breaks?

Let them close…I was in Aberdeen a few months ago, two self checkout lines a mile deep policed by someone that should have been a cashier, and two regular cashier lines.and 100 people standing in line and it seemed like 20 closed lines…I left a full cart and walked out as I had an appointment to make and not enough time.

I can care less about any box store closing! When they move into an area, they shut down all the mom and pop stores!! Walmart stores across the US can't close fast enough as far as I'm concerned. They ruined a LOT of people.

Law Dog was right when he said the china stuff is everywhere now....Wal-Mart started out good, and used to boast made in the USA while Sam was alive.
After he passed, the kids caved to the only weakness of capitalism, IMO....Greed.
It's a freak show in the local Wal-Marts....Every disfunctional, welfare drawing, non-working, pajama wearing, psycho society reject, shops there.

CA must have a huge number of store closings due to the thefts. Saw news clips where a large number of thieves will hit a store, take a lot of merchandise, and out they go in less than a minute there. Some stores have everything under lock and key. Interesting that it's mostly liberal states and cities that are having these problems.
My new car has a button for pretty much everything. Even has one that says rear wiper. Still too afraid to try that one.

Most of the time it would cost almost as much to remodel and incorporate all the code changes needed.I was looking at taking over a store Albertsons was closing All the refrigeration equipment was going to have to be replaced along with the entire HVAC system that alone was going to be right at a million dollars.
