I wouldn't trust that screw in any of my soil, although I would screwed into a root. I feel we have some it would hold in during the summer, but I wouldn't trust it, and a good thunderstorm might loosen it up. But I figure he knows his soil conditions better than I do half a country away.

I have seen trappers use long screws in videos from Australia. I went so far as to buy some screw in tent pegs, but I never tried them in actual trapping. I’d feel stupid if I had a coyote pull out. Maybe I’ll get the guts to try it sometime. If I do, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Ok, I pulled my 6-trap line yesterday. Three of the traps had been there 3 weeks, along with 6 DPs.
I had intentions of adding a drag to one, but when it came down to it, I just said to heck with it. I was tired of fooling with the line.
I think I'm probably working with 2 or 3 coyotes, and by this point they were completely unimpressed with the dead hogs (and the 6 coons), as well as my lures and inaccurate trap placement.
I did test the screws' holding power, at a 90° pull and straight, and they held.

I actually got the Idea from the YT dingo trapper, but he uses 2 screws, wich is something that I should probably do.
They can be screwed into the ground at 90 degrees from each other by going through adjacent chain links.
I'll try them again.

I played with those structural screws.

My hang up with them was stressing them putting one in and having it break during a catch.

I twisted a couple heads off just getting them in.



They make big 1/2” lag bolts all the way up to 20”-24” long I believe.

A friend tried them with a cordless impact.

They’re expensive but showed lots of promise.

Came on here to give a few updates. Still grinding on them as pups have left the den around here and started traveling with parents. They’ve been falling quickly to about any set they come across, except for standard dirtholes that I have all but pulled from the lines. Simple rebar punch holes filled with Mr. Jamesons mice oil has been killer, putting down over a dozen dogs in the last 14 days. They seem to dig to the center of the earth to get at it.
I’ve also had great luck dropping into creek bottom and setting along the banks. Can’t remember who recommended that but it’s been a great tip and I’m catching dogs in those bottoms whenever they aren’t moving anywhere else.
Travel corridors have become much more patternable the past two weeks, with last week having a cooler front and putting them on their feet and moving.
Lastly, I tried the big bait jackpot style sets. We don’t have many dead cows or horses laying around, so I’ve been using Alligators and setting the roads coming to them. Drop the gator dead in the middle of an intersection and start setting each direction 50’ to 300 yards down the roads.
Definitely seen some good progress with all the tips.

As a Predator control trapper in sheep and goat country, I’d love to take summer off. I did when I first started. But I have trouble turning down a rancher who is losing livestock. The same goes for the many high fence exotic ranches. I go where and when I’m needed. But there is a better way…

I spend a lot of time educating landowners. I try to get them to think ahead and hire me BEFORE the killing starts. An ounce of prevention…

The best ranchers have me come in a month or two before the babies hit the ground. I can slip in and set real sneaky sets. The coyotes are less on edge. They are acting natural. They are vulnerable.

I’m convinced that once they start killing livestock, they get more paranoid. They get focused on only the livestock. They are more likely to run straight in and kill, eat and be gone. Less likely to work a set on the way in or out. Hunting by more by sight. It all makes trapping them harder.


Plus… an overlooked part of starting early is the fact that I inevitably bounce some of the most paranoid coyotes out of the area. I have seen many dig outs leaving a high fence ranch when I start catching coyotes. The smart ones know to leave when they see/hear others get caught. I’d love to catch that coyote. It is probably a killer, but I’ll take the win every time.
