Most of lower Eastern Canada is in a drought. Millions of acres of timber is burning in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Thousands of people have been forced from and/or lost their homes. The fines and bans are ment to protect people from themselves as some are too dumb to realize the potential disaster of starting a fire.

I wouldn’t worry about it Warrior, this shouldn’t effect you. It’s unfortunate that they have to threaten the public with this. There’s just too many idiots out there. Earlier this year there was a back country travel ban in our area. I lost a portion of my line because of idiots, and nobody was (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) about it, from the hikers to the quaders to the hunters. Only ones allowed back in the bush was outfitters with a permit during bear season. All it takes is one dummy to loose it all. Keep the idiots out.

Hope there is more to the story than the guy just walked into the woods
Was he trespassing?
In a restricted area?
Article is pretty vague Drought conditions and high fire risk. What we would just have a burn ban where outdoor fires prohibited. Instead those provinces prohibit entering crown lands (public lands) for any reason, this includes all public parks. My understanding is crown lands make up the vast majority of land in those provinces. The individual ticketed did intentionally enter as a civil protest.

Our government creates and passes all sorts of laws to protect people from themselves and to mprotect normal folks from idiots. I don't think they should.
We don't do mit to the extent of the Canadian government though.
We were in a severe drought last year until this spring in southeastern PA. There were burn bans but nobody was banned from accessing public lands.
Eh...wot?

Well, what you do is give things a few years to settle down. Then go back in there and burn the woods down. Get your money's worth, Lol.

No outside burning without permit, but agriculture is exempt and forestry controlled burns are handled through the forestry dept.

It would seem that Canada imposes $28k fines because that's what the Canadians want them to do.

Authoritarian maybe, but blanket banning everyone from public land sounds extreme.

Did I say that was a prerequisite? I just said that these restrictions probably won't effect him. The issue is stupid people starting fires. Why is this a concern to you now? These have been out in areas since late spring and I don't think you read my post. Some of us that have assets/investments in the forest are sick and tired of people burning our stuff because they frankly don't give a crap and want to stroll or quad in the bush. Keep in mind that when they say "parks" they aren't talking about playgrounds.....lol.

There's probably more to this story than what's being told. There is, the premier of that province just doubled down upping fines to 50k and 100k if need be. Announced it in a public speech. It's not about, and never has been, controlling a fire risk.

I think they should drop the fine and just apply the jail time for this guy. Fine means eff all to someone with money, or someone with nothing to their name. Time in the clink is more effective.

The guy is a canadian combat veteran who did nothing wrong other than civil disobediance. He called ahead, told the forest guys what he planned to do. Met them at their office and walked in the woods for a few minutes. Even joked with them when they did their job.

Nothing wrong other than civil disobedience........, trump would have sent in the National Guard by now in that case. For those that have not seen a large forest fire, imagine (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) on earth, making its own weather patterns and bent on destroying everything it touches. The entire area is a tender box, not enough moisture to keep the fires down on the forest floor. When you see a 20 foot pine tree go up like a roman candle, then start jumping tree top to tree top, your okay with telling people to stay out of the woods.

billy. It’s a lot better around here now. Finally getting some rain. Go out at night and you get soaked with dew. Out east is not looking good.

What do you think the reaction would be if this happened in the US? I have family fighting fires out there and I guarantee they wouldn't agree with these kinds of restrictions on freedom. Keeping people away from an active fire, ok. But fined for hiking in general? No way.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

They gate state land roads here unless its hunting season, and then some still stay gated. Sure, you can hoof it in, but in reality, they're still restricting you.
Same difference imo.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

Same difference imo. Do they fine you? Make access less convenient is not the same as punishment. for doing so.

I guess if they called ahead, using this argument. The guy who called ahead was arrested. But Canada wasn't too worried about the draft-dodgers breaking the law and instead harbored them. Selective outrage for lawbreakers.

Same difference imo. I get upset about that, too. Especially when it's national forest land.
