What do y'all think about it? Anybody have any pros or cons? Compact or Standard length? If I was to get one, I was thinking I would get the Compact version (35.75" OAL) because I'm 4' 11'', and I figured it would fit me better than the Standard version (41" OAL). Does anyone think that the Compact barrel (18") would be too short for good accuracy? Does barrel length even affect accuracy all that much for .22 rifles? Thanks!!

the youth program got 8 of them under a grant I wrote in 2016 so we have a few years on them and some rounds.
3 compact and 5 standard
22lr doesn't get any more out of a longer barrel it is about done for velocity gains after 10-12 inches and often starts slowing down in the 20-22 inch barrels just not enough powder to burn past that point.
so you do not need barrel length for accuracy , if any thing shorter stiffer barrels are better. any thing gained in longer barrel is sight radius and with an optic it isn't needed.
so I would go the 18 inch suppressor ready threaded barrel version only because I can't find a 16 inch which I think they made a few distributor exclusive models mount a lower power optic on it like a 2-7 and be very happy shooting small game , targets of opportunity and on the trap line.
the bolts feel rough out of the box , I grease them with some red and tacky then cycle them a bunch of times just sit and cycle while you are not doing anything else a hundred or so times , then wipe all the excess grease off this seams to make them feel smoother , they are definitely not a polished bolt but it still falls under budget rifle mostly. triggers can be adjusted down to about 2.5-3 pounds those work well nice trigger
they share the mag with the 10/22 , those work great I use only some dry lube in them , in a decade you will probably have to clean and tighten the springs a turn or two the tandem cross mag maintenance kit is nice but not needed for that , just handy to wind the springs
haven't had anything break other than some cheap optics that came with them.
each rifle probably sees around 3-500 rounds a year so not huge but in 9 years , the 2020 season was canceled so figure 3-4K rounds a rifle
really solid guns , I would replace the factory supplied scope base with an EGW rail because it gives better mounting options for the optic.
I would buy some spare mags and a good sling and go
if the barrel isn't free floating in the stock a bit of brass shim at the front lug will get it there , stocks are a little flimsy but not too bad and you can upgrade that if it bothers you
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I was concerned about black plastic stock, so I upgraded to a Boyd's in blue laminate. Nice piece now!

I coach 4H shooting sports in my home county, 2 of the shooters use them in Sport Rifle Class and they are very accurate. There have been zero issues with them, they are the standard length rifle but the shorter barrel of the compact will be stiffer so should be more accurate. It sounds like the compact will fit you much better than the full size so while you are giving up nothing but sight radius with the shorter barrel you are gaining better fit of the rifle and as has already been pointed out if you plan to use an optic sight radius is irrelevant. Nice! Yeah I would be getting a scope for it too

Simple...Buy the shorter model now, then when you grow out of it, buy the longer one but keep them both!

I was issued a heavy barreled, suppressed, with a laminated stock. I could shoot nickel sized groups at 50 yards all day long with CCI 40 gr hp subsonics or CCI 45 gr hp suppressor rounds. Wow!

I'm wondering why you'd choose it over a 10/22? That's a good question. I just don't care for semi autos (at least for hunting anyway). They're a blast to shoot but I'd rather have a much simpler lever action or bolt action. Less parts that could break. Plus I like to chamber each round myself for some reason. And also I think the American looks cooler than the 10/22, if looks count for anything

I have the youth model and put a skinner rear peep site on it. I can put a bullet through a life saver at 20ft it’s my main dispatch gun on my trap line.
I also have the youth 22mag and have probably killed around 100 pigs , 50 coyotes and 10 fox out to 100yrds. It’s a fine little gun. I shoot the Hornady varmint V-Max out of it.

Just buy the dang rifle.
Ruger makes a dang good rifle. You won’t be disappointed.
Pick up and handle both. See what fits you best. You’re shorter so the compact will probably be best.
Only you can make the decision.

And also I think the American looks cooler than the 10/22, if looks count for anything the 10/22 is about as simple as it gets , a blow back bolt on a rod with a spring I mean it has a extractor and firing pin on the bolt with a pin to hold it in but that is about it. the trigger group has a hammer , sear , trigger and plunger safety but still not hard not a lot of parts I am not judging you on the choice of American rimfire over 10/22 , the bolt is less ammunition sensitive since you hand cycle it , but I wouldn't go simpler or fewer parts the 10/22 manual shows 54 parts and the Ruger American rimfire 62 parts
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
