What is a fast pulaski? I know what a regular pulaski is.

I believe FSS means forestry service but I may be wrong.

I've always understood FSS to stand for "forest service supply". Couldn't guess as to the other mark.

Speaking of pulaskis, question for the crowd.

How would a pulaski perform as a truck axe for clearing the occassional deadfall when woods bumming on back roads? Or would a more dedicated axe be better?

I know chainsaw but thats saw, file, gas mix and bar oil.

Never owned a pulaski.

"FSS" is the abbreviation for the Federal Supply Service. The FSS is the federal government supply agency that provides the U.S. Forest Service's equipment.

A Pulaski is a very versatile tool. It would be very useful to have with you on the back roads. You could use it to cut through the dead falls. It's also useful for digging, prying and scraping. Fire crews use them a lot. I wish I had more in my collection.

Thank you for the correction on FSS Keith. I appreciate the knowledge.

Works as well as an axe if you keep an edge on it. I’ve cut up 15”+ green western hemlock with one and it performed well.

Don't laugh warrior... but I swear by my little 14" Kobalt electric chain saw. Throw it in the truck with a full battery and a spare charged battery and never worry about it again.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Typically, Pulaski heads are made with poor steel and do not hold an edge well. Not easy to chop with them either. I carry one for bedding cage traps and have tried to cut small trees or windfalls. Not so good, they are good for chopping roots, but I also have an axe in my PU.

I've got one mounted on my flatbed for that purpose, if that answers your question. Although I generally have a saw also. They balance as well as an ax if you are going to be doing serious amounts of chopping, and as mentioned finding one out of good steel can be an issue. But then I've found finding an ax made out of good steel to be an issue also. If I'm going to be doing serious amounts of ax work I prefer a good double bit ax with a specific blade profile, but the digging side of the pulaski can come in very handy also, so for single multipurpose tool for the occasional deadfall, minor slide, rootwad, etc., they work well.
