I swear I'll never understand some people. I can't stand a dull knife, don't care if it's not popping hair off my arm but I wanna not have to struggle to cut meat. Keep all my knives firstly sharp. And I bring my little sharpen so dads with me and I'll do other peoples just because. But explain to me why the heck it seems half the time I sharpen a knife for someone they seem to just go an do stuff to dull it.... It's legit, " O my knife is sharp again.....lemme go do stupid stuff to mess it up !"

Remember had one guy in our unit come to me and asked me to re sharpen his knife . Said suuureee and he hands me this Benchmade that was just ATE UP dang thing looked like a saw blade..and he was complaining the whole time about how he paid XYZ for it Lazer honed this and that and it can stay sharp....well 1hr of re profiling, then re sharpening I gave it back to him did the whole cut though a piece of paper thing ect. Well he's happy as a can be....comes back an hour later trying to cuss me out saying it was a terrible job and it's already dull , proceeded to take I out and use it to cut though a soda can for is dip spit.... I just looked at him as asked if that was he did with his knife to which he said " YEAH ! ITS A TOOL AND IF IT WAS GOOD IT WOULD STAY SHARP !" Later he said before that ,to test the sharpness he went and just went a chopping away at a old 2x4 in the motor pool that was full of nail... Saw absolutely nothing wrong with that .

Then today walked in the galley and my pilot is trying to cut up some cow tongue, and he's cussing up a storm because the knives are dull .... I just sharpened them the other day , I had been using them , they're sharp ! Heck I bring my work sharp to the boat .! Well he stars saying yeah but it's the steel in the knifes it's not real steel can't hold an edge yadda yadda long story short...ish ends up he hit them all up with this chewed up diamond steel rod we got ,..that I've specifically told everyone not to use but noooo.... Looked at one of the knives and yep ..ate up tired

Like....why

I can't stand using our kitchen knifes. I can't get my wife to understand it only takes a 2nd to do a touch up and keep them nice and sharp. BUT she can't seem to notice they are starting to dull untill tahynare like a butter knife. so they don't get touched up. and I have to spend more time to get them back to sharp . add in she tends to drag the knife across the cutting board more than necessary dulling them faster.

It's something that drives me nuts I hate a dull knife they are dangerous. It's also something I have given up on changing. Even tried to claim a knife or to and ask no one else uses them. Ya that didn't work either.

Don't ever get a job at a butcher shop with a bunch of teenagers. You would struggle to survive the mental strain. I eventually had to bring a lockbox to work just to keep a decent edge at work. I feel your pain, and recommend that you just quit sharpening for people.

I just suggest they get a pack of these and the Utility knife they like.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-Carbide-Utility-Blade-50-Pack-DWHT11131L/204473025

you're going to get wore out on sharpening peoples stuff and abrasives don't last forever and no one ever seems to want to chip in on them.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Wolfie , I feel your pain.

One day I go into my firehouse and I had brought some stuff to sharpen up some of the cast-off lower grade knives in the kitchen. Somehow , there was a fairly nice Wustof kitchen knife that had found it way into the collection. I sharpened them all.

Less than 2 weeks later one of the knucklehead members there took the Wustof knife and used it to cut an extension cord , supposedly to shorten it for some reason. He did this while it was still plugged in. Yep , fully live 120vac.

Did some permanent damage to it by kinda 'spot welding' it and put some big gouges in it.

I've met some people in life that should not be given a screwdriver, pliers or a hammer. They will just get into trouble. This was one of those people.

That , and a few other dumb things caused the firehouse to ask that person to leave.

That chewed up diamond steel rod could just fall off the barge into the river.

Here's a cookie to go with your strawberry knives.

Lol When I was Ironworking I got tired of my tools geting stole. Cost adds uo for an apprentice. after all and not having tools to work with stink. So I painted them all pink now this was at least 23- 25 years ago and on construction sights. Surprisingly I didn't get a lot of coments after the first day on each job. always just gor a dumb founded look and srug and delayed knod. My pink tools never walked off either.

I normally carry a good knife or three and a steel with me if I think I will need to butcher or cook in an unfamiliar kitchen.

Community knives, I won't spend too much time or effort fixing them up.

I donated some pretty sharp knives to the Drawer at work.

The afternoon Shift Supervisor (Arrogant Idiot) threw them in the scrap bin because they were too sharp. He claimed it was for Safety reasons.

Not a big deal to me as I was selling re grounds at that time. This illustrates why the community knife drawer is not the place to store your good/sharp knives.

Wolfdog...thanks for what you did when you were a mod.
And thank you so much for archiving threads for us. It's probably a thankless job. I do appreciate it.
