I whack them behind the head with a sharp corn knife. Then use tin snips to cut all the way down the back. then start skinning with a knife. Not the whole fish just down the sides. they have a boneless backstrap like a deer. You will be surprised how much and how good it is. I think live bait fish is best. Dont use a big hook. Dont get in a hurry to set it. Takes awhile for them to get it past that beak into their mouth. Longnose is what I am talking about.

There is nothing more frustrating than have a far swimming off with s $15 crank after slashing the line.
We catch 5-10 every year on jugs. Gig that many or more. The bigger ones are very good eating. Remind me of shrimp.

Gar are a blast to catch… on rod and reel, but they cause you aggravation on your trotlines. Use a 2/0 circle hook and when they take the bait,, just let them run with it a little until they swallow it,, it’s tough sometimes to set the hook in that boney mouth. I like to use a creek chub , cut in half and threaded on the hook. I like to take the blackstraps and use shake n bake on them… toss em in the oven.

Nice job. They have some razors don’t they? lol. We used to catch them everyday day on the trot lines in NE Texas. Cut up hot dogs and chunks of Zoap caught more gar than live perch did for us.

Lakes and back waters are loaded with them around here. Almost impossible to catch on a hook, most guys use a jig head with a wad of wool yarn on it so's to tangle up it's teeth. Not bad eatin' either. Use tin snips to cut the skin/scales, and can give a nasty bite if careless. Or by bow.

I had a monster smack a jig and paddle tail couple weeks ago. Problem is, I didn’t get a hook set in their stupid little face.
You ever heard of people using nylon mesh? Apparently it gets caught in their teeth. I have heard of chopping a couple inches off the poly anchor rope unravel it and tie bunches around the jig head
