Just an idea Ive been playing with in my head, not sure if anyone else here has done it.
I’m thinking about saving some lids off the canned soup cans and using them as pans on my #11 and #2 long springs.I was thinking about drilling holes through the lids and the existing pan on the trap, and then using pop rivets to hold it.
Any one else try this idea??

Think I've seen that idea before, not necessarily for that size trap.

I did it when I was a kid and first read about expanded pans for cats. It works but the can material isn't sturdy enough for longevity. What I ended up doing was cutting the lids to size and shape, then riveting two together most of the way around and slipping it on the pan as a removable expanded pan. They were often destroyed with a catch, but they were cheap enough.

I can't imagine lids off soup and vegie cans not being stout enough to last. I've seen cans in woods dumps at least 50-75 yrs old still pretty strong.

Maybe they had better or more material back in the day. I just know the ones I used had a tendency to get chewed/bent up.

I dont like anything sharp around my sets but there are some can openers that cut the can below the rolled seam of the lid. I use expanded pans on exposed cat sets- not sure how this mod would benefit coon traps.

What do extra large pans do other than increase the likelihood of toe catches?

These traps are going to be intended for water sets ran off on a drowner rig.. I know exactly how hard a coon fights a trap… and probably gonna nab the occasional otter.. but figure the trap going down the rig might help the pan to last a while longer before being beaten up and having to replace it

We just bought a dozen Wind River trap pans and had a friend weld them on for us, $25 about all in. They work great and no toe catches.
All of these were behind the main pad. Offset jaw traps.

We also use a large piece of shingle that is trimmed to fit just inside the jaws, has some screen stapled to the back to hold it in place.
Looks a lot like Leftlane's setup but on coil spring traps. Pretty cheap and works well also.

Good thing about cats is you can really block them at a set and they are pretty good about placing their foot in the center of the open spot. If u can't center the critter on the pan big pans aren't always a good thing.

Imo electric knock out plates would would be a lot better with no much more price. O word of advice to avoid toe catches . Put them UNDER the pan. Putting them on top give you a higher pans and if you don't readjust your pan that's when you get your toe catches the most . Putting it under the pans give you more of a step down effect .. but yeah definitely spend the ...what $.75-$1.00

FYI There's nothing you can try that hasn't been done in the last 200 years. But try your idea and see if it works!
