having had no one in the family that trap, a school friend down the road about a mile or so his mom rented a house, the guy that own it had all kinds of traps hanging on the back side of a building, we used some of those traps to catch rabbits, probably 8-9 years old at the time, I mowed lawns and collected bottles for the two cent return, and bought two dozen number one long spring

I had (10) #1 victor longs, (2) #1-1/4 herters longs, those were all given to me in 70s.
Later I ordered some new traps for first time and I think it was (24) northwoods #2 longs. I actually ordered #3 longs for coyotes but they shipped me #2 longs and I ended up just using those for coyotes instead and they worked great.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

My first NEW dozen came from Ed Bauer fur company.. dad and I took some ginseng down to Ed’s and dad said that I did good hunting ginseng and that I earned my traps. 1 dozen brand new shiny 1.5 victor longsprings.
I thought I was in heaven.
My next batch came from an older gentleman.. I don’t even remember how we became acquainted… he had some longsprings hanging up in his barn… I’d earn 1 longspring after every time I mowed his yard. He would talk about how he loved to catch mink and fox and I really enjoyed his company.
I hated it when we had to move…I lost contact with him…I had learned that he had passed away not too long after we had moved. I still think about that old man from time to time,,, I think everyone here would have enjoyed his company.

Thanks for sharing the memories. I had a fishing buddy I met when I was in my mid twenties probably. Older fella, had the truck the boat etc that I didn't and took me fishing, talked about life, and the good lord. I was a carpenter so I helped him build a deck before selling his house. I lost his number and got a new phone so even if he tried to call me he wouldn't have it. He was old 10 years ago when he moved to ontario. Would love to know how Roy is doing. I know I'll meet him again in glory. Hopefully you'll see your old friend again as well Foxkidd

First traps were gifted to me from my trapping partner and a few from an old time trapper he ran around with. Mix of 330s, 1.5 LS, some #1.75 CS and a couple #4 jumps. Old timer had health /mobility issues and his wife wouldn't let him trap alone anymore, so he took my buddy under his wing and showed him around the local spots he'd trapped for years, in trade for taking him with him.

Bought my first store bought trap from FnT on credit for selling them beaver I'd caught.

Wasn't that long ago, like a few others, I didn't get in the game till I was grown. Probably 25 yrs ago.

Now I've got too many traps and not enough time. frown

I honestly can't remember. I am beyond thankful my father was a trapper. The first memories I have of trapping was throwing 330s for beavers. I WAS HOOKED!

Some of my first ones I think I may have purchased myself were some Herter's #1 1/2s. I had fallen in love with their big ol' pans. Still very much a Herter's fan for the nostalgia it brings back from the mid 2000s.

Cal was a good man and I often spent some of my fur checks at his place before I got out of the door.

I inherited a small handful of jump and LS traps from one of my grandpas as he passed while i was still a little guy. Caught a couple coon and rats with them and soon purchased a 5 gal bucket full of 110s and 1.5s. The fur boom was on in the mid 80s so tooling up was the thing to do.
