Heck yeah! Nice job.

Did you ask if the elk was ok if you used a crossbow? It might hurt his feelings.

You did mess up. The evil crossbow is in the picture. Might trigger folks.

Good for you Law Dog. I have tried them twice when I was young but no success. Good eating wasn't it.

I wonder in the world of " I'm purer than thouist" If they remember what the ultimate objective of hunting is...to bring food home back to the table.

I do enough things to earn my massochist card.

The challenge I've picked for myself is to see if i can tag out in my state while spending the least amount of energy, money and time into getting deer back to the freezer.

Why would anyone care what someone else uses? I don't get it, the people that use crossbows aren't hunting where you hunt are they? If it's a legal option and you both are hunting on public land then you have the option to use a crossbow. That's basically the end of the discussion to me.

The year before WI legalized crossbows I had a shoulder injury that I let go for far too long. I beat the crap out my body when I was younger working at the co-op lifting more than In should've. The result was a right arm I could barely reach the top of my head to wash my hair. I had 3 cortizone shots with the last one having zero effect. I had a large calcium deposit in my shoulder. I was sent to physical therapy and when the therapist asked me to walk my fingers up the wall to assess my mobility I had to lift my arm up and couldn't even go up all the way. His response was "oh crap this isn't good". To shorten the story a procedure was done later to remove the calcium using a saline solution and needles to draw the calcium out. What was supposed to take 20 minutes took an hour and 20. I got a permit for a crossbow, and I've used one since. I occasionally have issues with my shoulder as they couldn't remove it all.

You do you and use what you want and I'll do the same and look at that we get along just fine.

Considering that the crossbow has been around in rudimentary fashion since 200-400 years before Christ. And the compound bow has only been breathing since the mid 60's . I'd say the crossbow has earned a spot in the woods.

That said, the majority of compound shooters have their bows equipped with the latest and greatest gear known to man. Kisser button, peep sight or some other device to hit the same anchor point with every draw. Probably 99% or more compound bow shooters are using a mechanical release that is, you guessed it trigger activated. And have somewhere between 65 & 80% let off.

What I don't see very often is someone that shoots a compound bow that can shoot a bare compound bow or stick bow. But stick bow/bare bow shooters can typically pick up one of those tricked out compound bows and be shooting good in short order.

I shot a Pronghorn Longbow for 30+ years until my shoulders would no longer allow it.
Now I shoot a crossbow. Not the top of the line, maybe not even middle of the pack. It's sighted in for 20 thru 50 yards. I shoot no further than 30-40 yards max at an animal and hunt on the ground, which most compound shooters have no clue how to do. There's no need to shoot further. The funny thing is that I run into people now and again that shoot crossbows and never hear about them trying to launch an arrow at a deer 100 yards out. I hear about it a lot from compound shooters. I always ask them why. And always get the same stupid look from them as they reply with "well I did it at home last month". Gotta shine that ego up before firearms season when they take their 6.5 Needmore out and send bullets 800 yards down range at a deer.

The crossbow has absolutely nothing over a compound bow in f p.s., more effective range or any other advantages.
For most people that shoot a crossbow, they're just trying to fill the freezer. Unlike most compound shooters that trade up every couple years to the latest and greatest bow on the market that are only after bragging rights about how much they have tied up in their bow.

I will take a crossbow over a compound bow anytime.

Nice. Probably was chewy because you used a crossbow. lol. Great job on the elk. Good on you for sharing some meat also.

No magnification with the scopes here in SD just used as a sight I don’t think it would matter for the distance I’m shooting.

X2 if more deer die because of crossbows, they are just fine IMO.

There's to many people hunting. Making weapons more effective just makes more competition between people to get an animal, woods are just more crowded now with crossbows being legal.

I killed my first several deer with a bow starting about 14. Would often bow hunt during gun season. So you could say I love bow hunting.

That said I got an x bow so my daughter could hunt more when she was about 8 after they changed the law and made them legal for everyone. It worked great set up in a ground blind and placed on a rest. Found out I liked shooting it as well. Started the boys on them before they could dream of pulling compounds strong enough to hunt with. ( but they had them at least 3 own each I think now) Just bought a 2nd one last year so now have 2 .

I have not shot a deer in several years and focus on taking the boy. If I do decide to shot any during archery season after the boys tag out or get their fill I will be taking One of the x bows and not my compound. Why becuse I dont take time to shoot it and dont shoot it as well as I would prefer these days. There was a time I shot my bow several times and several hours a week. I have not shot it 20 times in the last 3 years and dont plan on it. I have been home in 6 days when I get home tomorrow night at 230am. Yes I will be off and home 5 days but that time will not be spent shooting my old bow. It will be geting theing ready for youth deer and taking the boys squirrel hunting and spending time with the wife and daughter.

Its a tool . Shooting a compound dose not make you special or any better same as someone that hunts with a bow they made arrows they bleached and stone heads they knaped themselves is any beter or superior to you.

All it says to me is themselves guys have more time on their hands and hunt how they enjoy it..
this is what's its all about. Geting out hunting and it gets us out more

sorry our choice may offend you But what can I say last year this one was 14 and killed around 25 deer so far. He won't care if you like his choice either. And his x bow is in the picture.

Edit my youngest killed his first turkey spot and stalk by him with a A 15 lb long bow and a field point. was wearing a orange shirt and red shorts. I dont have any pictures of that I could find on this phone

And the one above has shot one doe with his one of his compounds he has now out grown.

But they aren’t any more effective than vertical bows.

Should just do a 3 month rifle season and only give out so many tags like they do out west.
