We took a couple of kids on a hike to a couple of mountain lakes a few days ago. Gideon and Reuben insisted on hiking bare-foot, it was six miles round trip, not counting walking around the lakes.
I didn't hear one complaint.

Never wore shoes when I was younger either. Feet were like concrete back then. Now I can't step on a pebble barefoot without wanting to swear

Brings back memories. The snow was barely melted when as a kid I'd be shedding my shoes for the year. From April till October I ran barefoot every minute I wasn't stuck in school. Who had time for shoes when there were so many creeks and ponds needing waded in?

That's how my daughter is to this day. Last walk we went on with the family was about 4.5 miles and she was barefoot. My youngest went bare foot last time down in KY was only about 2 miles and rock covered trail. But he was sure happy to get back to the trail head.

Yes, they did catch a lot of stunted eastern brook trout. Notice the size of the head in relation to the rest of the body.
There is very little feed in this sterile, high elevation lake, the lake has ice cover for about seven to eight months of the year.
