Here in our area a good milkling Holstein herd is worth about 3-4K per head of milking and dry cows. Short bred to springin heifers are 2400-3,000. open heifers 1200 to 2000. Calves heifers 300-500, Holseien bull calves 600-900 and crossbred with beef, 700 to 1200 all on average with many going higher. These values are almost exactly double of what they were 4-5 years ago. The good thing about dairy operations as there are people there 24,7 365 so opportunities for theft are lowered a lot, plus most farms here are in quite heavily populated areas.

It should be a hanging offense. Talk was made that carjacking should be a hanging offense as well , I would support that.

As rangeland gets converted to crop land some cattle guys are having to travel farther to find pasture ground in this country. I have guys with summer pasture that’s 150-200 miles from home. They are an easy target for the criminals as it’s easy to back a trailer into a pasture in the dark and get a load. Have in happen it seems like almost yearly.
With no brands it’s also easy for a neighboring landowner to open a gate and push a few cows thru and mix them in with his cattle, usually just need to change out ear tags. Lots of cattle get mixed up in neighbors pasture and 99% of the time they are returned to where they belong but there are always a few bad apples.

This is why our pasture doesn't have permanent corrals, it'd take dogs or corral panels to setup and load our cows out

I remember years ago in Michigan , some idiots shot a steer and was butchering it right in the field.
Claimed it was a deer.

Are you guys seeing this stuff in your neighborhood??

Around here you start seeing it more as he price of cattle rises but there always seems to be scattered instances of it around but when the value goes up so does the amount of theft, there’s a constant amount of horse theft though, it’s never a lot but there’s always someone going out to their pasture and finding a horse or two gone and often as not they don’t even know when they disappeared

Same can be said about some of the larger producers of cattle around here especially when running them on rented ground where they might not set eyes on them every day
