I like squirrel hunting more than eating them so dont shoot a lot typically. But my boys have put it on them so hard i have not cleaned one i have shot yet this year.

The best way i found to cook them is slow in the crock pot with garlic salt sprinkled on top with noting else added . no water nothing. Typically about 5 squirrel take arounf 5 hours and they fall off the bone. But I would love to try something different so I can attempt to knock a few down myself. I say attempt becus my hearing is bad and well makes it tougher to locate them.

Anway how do you like to cook them?

I like squirrel that's breaded and fried brown in a pan, that is then cooked long and low in a crockpot, with a brown gravy made from the pan drippings. My friend Marvin's wife, Wanda, makes the best squirrel I've ever eaten. They are in their mid eighties. If I didn't have access to it through them, I would buy it in a restaurant, if a restaurant offered it.

I use a slow cooker, but when I am fortunate I do the squirrels with my grouse and a cottontail if available. I do the minced garlic, onion, carrot and potatoes with this mix along with worchester sauce.

I pressure cook them. Twenty minutes at 10 psi and the meat is falling off the bone. I then brown and serve over brown rice with mushroom gravy.

My daughter and I can't shoot enough squirrels to keep up with the family demand for that recipe. .

Eh...wot?

The Hmong just build a fire and burn off the hair and eat around the guts.

I was invited to diner by one of my friends. While sitting around having a beer or two I could smell dinner cooking. I said that sure smells good. His wife told me to come take a look at what we were having for dinner. It was a pot full of squirrels with the heads still attached. Well, that didn't bother me much. But when they were served and we started eating they broke open the skulls and ate the brains. Well being a Marine I couldn't back down, and I pitched right in. They were really good, but I never ate any kind of brains after that.
Anyone else eat squirrel brains?

I like to prepare my squirrels fresh berries with a walnut chutney. They just can't get enough of it.

You can get Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from eating squirrel brains. I hear about people dying from it every few years or so. One year six people died from it in Kentucky. A guy from New York died from it around 7 years ago. It can cause serious damage, without killing you, too.

Drove by a decent size public area here in NE Iowa and counted 15 different vehicles ( mostly toyota) all Minnesota plates. 2- 5 people each and all among. Squirrels are going extinct this weekend.

…. Glad we don’t have them here …. Mescins don’t care too much for squirrels from what I’ve seen
