Just got back from the supermarket.
Some supermarkets carry odds and ends of things you not normally think or look for in a supermarket.

They had a 65" Visio TV for sale. For $349

TV's have gotten SO cheap compared to years back. I'm sorta glad they are not made in USA anymore. At $349 , there is not a lot of room for profit.

The gooks have so much labor, and at almost slave labor prices, they can sell any thing dirt cheap and still turn a profit.

There used to be such a thing as TV repair men. Now we just throw them away.

My dad was TV repairman.
I felt slightly privileged as a 2yo because I had my own TV , my brother had one , mom&dad had one , one in the living room , one downstairs , one in my dad's workshop. All B&W clunkers he got for free and fixed them. Most homes at the time had 1 TV , 2 if they had some money.

About the only thing that is left is orthopedic shoe shops for custom shoes for the disabled. They are CRAZY expensive. $1k-$4k for one pair of shoes.

The last shoe/repair shop I remember was when I was a young man. My mom use to go to old "Charlies Shoe Shop" ( an old foreign fella ) don't recall his nationality and buy me school shoes and get her heels and purses repaired etc.

I also remember some of his equipment and sewing machines as I liked to watch him work a little when mom was busy looking at other items in the shop.

Gosh I guess that says a lot about how old I am.

My grandfather apprenticed in Germany as an orthopedic shoe maker, which he did after moving to the US, later he started a shoemaker supply and leather business.
As kids we would go fill boxes with heels and soles, got payed with lunch, lol
Also serviced and sold the machines used by shoemakers.... I believe all those customers are long dead with no one to replace them...can't think of a single repair shop.

Several shops around here that repair shoes. The problem is finding shoes worth having repaired.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

AH, never forget the special smell of a shoe repair shop. Often was combined with belt and saddle making.

OR: finding a pair that CAN be repaired. All those cheapo shoes have molded on soles, with plastic uppers. I occasionally have need to sew some heavy straps/webbing, have to go with rivets or nuts/bolts.

Computers, TVs a d fur the only thing that have went down in price.. I think the 85/6 tvs are Walmart ase under a 1000 now.

349 for a 65 is about what you'd pay for 55 at Walmart.

We had a Vietnamese man who had a small shop that was cluttered with product people never returned for. Our last repairman was Eastern European. He died.

I am retired and somewhat feeble. In the warm seasons I wear Sketchers slip on sneakers. Cheap, light, and comfy. Only problem is my feet get wet from the morning dew.

Last time I was in a shoe repair shop, I was getting married and needed a pair of black dress shoes, yep, he had a pair that was never picked up and I think I paid 5 bucks, lol
They were a little tight but they only needed to last the day, gave them to my brother and he wore them for years, they were quality leather shoes.....this was 48 years ago,, grin
