For those that think cats don’t respond very well to lure I’ve got a story

…. Y’all remember when mb 550’s had the burr on the night latch that kept them from firing?

.. anyway before I realized they needed filing I had set some new ones out

… had feathered up dirtholes lured with dobbins puuurfect

… rolled up on a set with a cat laying on it … said to myself good deal

… until that cat stood up and ran off

…. He had slept on that lure all night judging from the sign

… been a believer ever since…. The entire area was tracked up

They do interesting things…one year I was hanging snares on cat tracks in the snow on and around the last ridge that a ten mile slough backs up against. Rabbit (snowshoe hare) sign everywhere and cat sign following that huge edge. A dredge ditch intersection was quite a funnel a the willow was so thick it was hard to access the ditch ice. Hung a few snares and caught some hares. I pinched the fur up the middle of the back on a hare and pulled it apart to make some long rips and suspended a fur bundle 3’ off the ground on a good rabbit trail…thinking I’d snare a cat going in…if I’d have just set a trap below the hare fur I’d of had the cat, and he spent some time battling that toy, shredding it, and all around leaving a mess. Didn’t catch the cat.

Im convinced that cats use their nose way more than most give em credit for. Your experience would confirm that and has me laughing. I bet you said a few choice words as he was on his way out of sight.

I think cats have a better nose than we usually figure. What their brain does with the information is a different matter. I've got to watch a few cats on video work sets. It very intresting. I use odors at almost all my sets but do much better when I make that set like a blind set where I think that cat has a high probability of stepping any way. I think and have seen sometimes where cats sometimes wouldn't go to far out of their way to investigate an odor. Couple videos I got of cats working a test set for coyotes amazed me how long they stayed at the set. But I've also seen cats on videos where they definitely smell a lure but wouldn't go investigate it close enough to get caught. Another intresting thing I've seen with my house cat( and I've tested it several times) is if the odor is too strong it doesn't have much interest but give it a few days to air out and it goes crazy for it..... and will have an intense intrest for quite a few days. Was blessed one time to visit with Mercer Lawing about cats and hes got a lot of good first hand knowledge of cats and odors. Very intresting guy if u get the chance to talk cats with him.
