Yes, a fox red lab. I’ve been wanting another lab for a while now, but my wife said no to three dogs in the house. Then she changed her mind on the condition that it was a red lab. I didn’t argue.

So how do you get a red?, breed a yellow to a brown and see what happens?

The fox red color is really just a darker shade of a yellow lab. They are usually registered as yellow labs because the AKC only recognize three colors in labs, black, yellow and chocolate.

To get fox red labs they selectively breed yellow labs that have darker shades of red/orange on their coats which most yellows have to some extent.

Their were three male reds in the litter I picked from, all were varying shades of red/yellow.

15 minutes a day training you’ll have a great dog. Smart and eager to please. My female is 70 pounds at 5 years old. They grow up quick! [Linked Image]

I’ve been training labs for going on 50 years now saskbone. And you’re right, it’s not hard or time-consuming. You just have to be willing to be consistent and educate yourself on proper methods.

Training question for you. My pup likes to retrieve but he wants me to chase him for whatever he has. How do I brake him from this?

One method is to toss him the retriever dummy and when he runs out to pick it up, start running away from him. His instinct will be to chase you. When he gets close stop, get a hold of him and praise the heck out of him for delivering to hand.

Another method would be to use a check cord to show him exactly what you want.

It all depends on his age and how ingrained that bad habit is.

I’ve always started retriever training very young with my labs. Soon after they recognize their name, which is about nine weeks old, early training starts.

One thing I’ve always done is to use the hallway in our home as a retrieval lane. Me and the pup would sit at one end, I toss the dummy to the other end, the pup would go pick it up and start running back and he couldn’t get by me. I would stop him, take the dummy from him, and praise the heck out of him for delivering to hand. Labs are pretty intelligent, at least most of them are. They pick up stuff really quickly and I rarely had to use much
force to get them to do what I want them to do.

From the very beginning you want to get them excited about retrieving.

I find that in the house he will bring his toys to me to throw again but outside he wants me to chase him which I won’t do. I usually stop playing . He is 7 mos old now. I will try your methods thanks for the advice…

Another thing to consider is that you have to have the three basic commands down pat to where the dog will follow them instantly and without question. Sit, stay and come are the three commands, the foundation that everything else is built off of.

Those three commands also start very early with my dogs. Again, usually around the time they recognize their name, which is usually about nine weeks old. At first it’s just a walk on leash. I say the command sit. Lift up on the leash, push down on his butt. Two or three times per trip outside. It’s really amazing how fast a young pup like that will get the idea. Within a week, sometimes even less they’ll be doing it on their own.

The next command, stay, an extension of sit. Once the puppy sitting, I back up using the universal stop sign, a raised hand, palm forward to the dog saying the command stay. It takes a few repetitions, but after awhile they get the idea.

And finally, come, is an extension of the first two. After the pup is sitting and staying, I release him from staying by squatting down, clapping my hands and commanding come. Usually, they are very eager to rush towards you. If not a little tug on the leash gets them moving in the right direction.

They have to have those three commands pretty solid before we advance to anything else other than play fetching in the house.

One of my good hunting buddies went and bought Ranger’s brother yesterday. He brought Remington down for a visit today.
