Though this thread is basically about food but there are other facets of pettiness that aren’t related to food that are just as impactful to a person’s livelihood. A chef, a cook, a server’s attention to their customers needs is easily understandable but what about anyone who has to meet a specific criteria? If a person fails to meet whatever the acceptable and expected criteria is specified is it being petty to complain is the question and how is that handled by the purchaser.
Because I was a Welding Engr as well as a Certified Welding Inspector, I had to oversee Welding Inspectors who could be petty or picky when inspecting welders welds. Believe me there is a fine line between the two and what the spec says very similar to a fast food expectation also the “who is on top” deal. One of the first things that I warned inspectors about was the fact that these welders (or restaurant workers) all had families depending on them. Make sure the inspection of a welder’s work wasn’t petty or picky but only according to the spec understanding that the inspector held the welder’s future paycheck and that of his family in their hands when they inspected and criticized the welds!!
Hopefully my analogy isn’t to obtuse to food suppliers for folks to recognize a correlation. Think about your son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter back the on the flattop trying to cook to your satisfaction without you knowing it or under the welding hood trying to make a weld that meets the spec and some welding inspector is trying to tear your house down by being petty/picky with the spec over a spec of undercut or a customer going ape-chit about a missed order??? Make sure your reaction meets the severity of the conditions!

The only four things a manger of a restaurant require of their employees nowadays is:
1. Will you show up? 2. On time? 3. Sober? 4. And work the entire shift?
NONE OF THEM do a drug test. If they did they wouldn't hire anyone and would go broke paying for positive drug tests.
Fast food employees are not college grads nor do they get paid as such. These are people, who for the most part, did not graduate high school or made poor choices in life.
It is rare anyone WANTS to work at a fast food joint as these jobs are mostly entry level jobs. The vast majority of employees have little to no interest in promotion or getting a better job in life.
And the vast majority have a lower than average IQ and a lot have trouble with English and I include native born Americans in that group.
You get what you pay for when you go through the drive through. Check your bag AND your change before you leave the window.
If you dine in and the order is wrong, ask the waitress to repeat what you ordered so as not to offend as you may have made a mistake also.
And most importantly, DON'T punish the waitress with a lower tip if the order was not right. If it was brought to your table in a timely fashion with a smiling face, tell them you don't blame them. I do ask for a re-fire if the order is wrong. Especially if it is an expensive item. I know, I have probably gotten "extra" ingredients but I feel the correction needs to be made with the cook not reading the order correctly. But then we get to my reference of lots of employees having trouble with English and reading.
It all comes down to restaurants scrape the bottom of the barrel for good employees. Sad but true.
How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

if you get angry , it's your blood pressure going up not the waiters. if you stew in it , it is your health that is effected not the cooks. if you won't let it go , it's your sleep that is lost not the owners.
so mention stuff nicely , see if they fix it , be clear in what you are asking. then let it go and if it was a bad experience don't go back looking for it to be better.
quit drinking the poison of anger and expecting the other person to get sick.

I'm pretty petty when it comes to food. I don't get nasty with the wait staff. I direct it towards the kitchen. I once ordered a burger from Red Robin. I said well done. Meaning little too no pink. When it came out not only was it extremely pink in the middle, it was cold. I sent it back. Next one came out pink and barely warm. I asked for the manager. She went back and yelled at the cooks.
Ordered another one and stood there and watch them cook it. Here the cook fancied himself some sort of high priced chef and was going by the "feel test" on doneness. She told him they had thermometers for a reason, and if he didn't start using them she would fire him.
Next one came out was perfectly done.
McDonalds: Ours is horrible. I've had them screw up my order some many times it's nuts.
Order a bacon egg and cheese biscuit, and it come out as a sausage and cheese biscuit, and a whole host of other combos, Last one I ordered a BEC biscuit and it came out as sausage egg and cheese. I didn't realize until I took a bite out of it. I took it back up and said I ordered a BEC. The girl looked at it, shook her head, and wrapped it back up and put it in the warmer. Then handed me my correct item and walked in the back.
As she walked away the manager walked by and I told her she needed to check the first thing in the warmer. She opened and looked at me. I told her what had happened. She went in the back and started screaming at the poor girl. As I walked to my car I saw the girl come out crying. My wife asked what happened and I said I think she got fired.

Last week I ordered just a burger. My wife ordered soup, sandwich, and coffee. When our order came, mine was a burger and fries. I told the waitress I rarely ever eat fries and didn't want them. She looked at her slip and saw she didn't include fries on my order and said the cook must have added them. I wouldn't be charged for them. I never ate them.
My wife got her soup and sandwich, but no coffee. She asked about the coffee and was told they were making a fresh pot and they would bring it over when it was done. She never got the coffee. When we finished eating I went to pay the bill. The fries were taken off, but the coffee was still on the bill. I mentioned that my wife never got the coffee. She asked if my wife still wanted the coffee? She took it off the bill and said, "Sorry about that."

You see a lot of that sort of thing on a show called Customer Wars. Customers who go crazy because it's taking too long to get their food. Or, they got mustard on a burger when they didn't want it. I remember one show where the customer got irate because the burger she got wasn't as big as the one advertised on TV! So, she got up on the counter and was throwing condiments and food at the workers. This was after the manager offered to give her a refund!
