Some months back my son came showed me picture of wooden whiskey mug. Said you think you could make me something like that? Well being a putterer.. challenge excepted. Being here in WI with plenty of oak trees and saw mills. I didn't realize how hard it would be to find kiln dry white oak. Wanted a 4x4 which I quickly learned was probably not going to happen. At least in something kiln dried which is more stable. I even considered trying a piece from brother inlaw fire wood pile. But could not find pieces big enough that hadn't started checking. So search continued until I was able to find some kiln dried white oak in 8/4. That required me to glue up but seems my only option for now.
So off to the shop I went. I think my end product turned out pretty decent for first try. Figure I will be doing more for sure this winter.

It goes like this..

Get the blank glued up with good water proof glue



Spin and cut to shape sand smooth on lathe.


Bored out and ready to finish.



Char the inside heavy coat of plain beeswax on out side.



Think I ended up with pretty decent first born. Decided to hand stamp the bottom so used metal stamps.



Interesting adventure for sure and I learned somethings didn't know before I started. Been some time since I worked with hard wood on lathe. Definitely find out how sharp or dull tools are.
