Hello Gents, we do a lot of canning on the homestead with tomatoes making up the majority of our canned goods. I typically prefer Roma tomatoes for canning but will use whatever I grow (beefsteaks, bradywine, etc). This spring, we were told about the Super Sauce Hybrid from Burpee. They were claimed to be the size of the canning jar. Well, they are like Roma tomatoes on crack, but not near the size of the canning jar (pint maybe). I was wondering what paste tomato do y'all prefer?

Prefer non-hybrid because so easy to reseed the next year.
Yours sound real interesting.

For home garden try Parks Whopper Improved.
I gave up the "we grew these forever"
and their problems.

We grow nearly all heirlooms. however, since these were highly recommended, we decided to try them. They have put off a massive yield, don't get me wrong. However, I prefer to save my own seeds. When compared to Roma, is there much difference from the Amish Paste or San Marzano? or are they all basically the same? Growing up we always grew Roma for canning.

San Marzano is a Roma type tomato and generally has excellent flavor in my experience.
When I was growing lots of tomatoes, I became really fond of Supremo (hybrid)... great yield, high disease resistance, great flavor, but the seed was expensive.

Just happy to be here.

Opalka has been a good, reliable, heavy producer for me. It's indeterminate and, in spite of being polish, handles our southern heat better than most still pumping out tomates when frost gets it. It's one idiosyncracy is that the first set of fruit will get blossom end rot no matter what. There won't be BER on any other variety in the garden but Opalka will have it. But it shrugs it off and is perfect the rest of the season. I figure it's a growth thing of the plant setting fruit before the plant can support it.

San Marzanos are the tomatoes in all the high rated bottled sauces.... and are chef's choice.... So might as well grow what many think of as the best Roma type.

Amish paste. It’s like a Roma on steroids.

San Marsanos for flavor, Amish paste for lots of sauce.

my wife and I have tried San Marzano and Amish Paste. However we have much better luck with Burpees super sauce tomatoes. much more meatier and makes way more tomato sauce and juice than the other types we have tried so definitely super sauce.

I have about 15 gallons of blanched, peeled, & diced tomatoes in the freezer, and am processing more every week. I know how many quarts I need to put up annually to get me through the year. The regular Roma and Roma VF that we normally grow are consistent producers, and we have used them for decades, but compared to the Super Sauce they are small. The Super Sauce seeds are expensive at 25 seeds for $6.95 online. I might have to try out the Amish Paste or San Marzano to see if they work better for the time invested.

Unfortunately, Simions closed down. I had a lot of folks come buy plants from me this year asking why it closed.
