We lost a great man and Wisconsin trapper on August 3rd. Steve Zehner was originally from the Thorneapple Dam area near Bruce, WI and later moved to Eau Claire. I trapped with him for many years and he was porbably the hardest working man I'd ever met. He would start in the dark before daylight and finish trapping after dark. He would return to his trapping shack and skin until midnight to 2 am. His clean-skinning of beaver was amazing as was his put-up on all his furs. He cared for his diabetic wife for many years and continued to work about 60 hours a week at Menards treating plant. He was always willing to help friends and family with any project they needed done. He also had a very comicle side and loved to laugh. He was going to start drawing Social Security this December and retire shortly after. He was really looking forward to retirement but never made it. He choked on some food in his kitchen and by the time help arrived he was already gone.

He was a great outdoorsman and very skilled in hunting, fishing and trapping. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. Enjoy your friends as much as you can because we never know when our time is up.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Sorry to hear that Lance. I didn't know him personally but heard about him and some of his big catches of beaver from the Chippewa cty area through other trappers that knew him. RIP fellow trapper.

Thanks Walt. Steve and I caught almost close to 200 one year. We trapped from the start date in early December and went to the end of April. The guy would get out of the truck running and went all day long. I have a lot of stories that I'm going to write down so I don't forget.

Very unfortunate and sad. He sounded like a great man, husband, trapper and friend. May he rest in peace and enjoy the splendor of the great beyond.

Chris
