Great pics and great discussion.

Yes Sir, from this pics, I reckon that’s why you hear so much about Kansas.

Mr. Swamp, if you get crazy, try you some tillage radish (called daikon radish as well). I prefer that 10-1 over turnips.

I like your oat mixture, problem is I’m a little bit North of you and they seem to really fall off after the first frost.

Done some short reading on the daikon radish. Problem is finding it in small enough bags for my needs. I have about 5 acres in about 7 plots that will be fall planted.

If the postage wasn’t so bad, I’d send you some.

I’m sure that you’ve perfected what you have going on. I just finished up everything, just need some dang rain. It’s been silly dry for the last few weeks.

Hope you see some more good deer cycle in. I can’t believe that we’re only several weeks away from bow season here in VA. Each year seems to fly by faster.

Appreciate the offer. What are you paying up your way for the radish seed? I found some down here for $51 but no bag size mentioned. If that's 50 lbs....I definitely won't need that much to use in a mix.

You've got me doing a bit more search on it. Seems the radishes like loamy, well drained soils and are drought tolerant....might fit well in most of my small fields.

Mr Swamp, I pay about $2.50-$3 / lb. You had mentioned having sandy soil before, that’s why I brought it up. I’ve found them to be preferred by the deer amongst most anything else I’ve planted other than standing beans before they’ve been harvested. Much more later in the season however.

If you’re worried about extra seed, I always carry seed over at least one season, if not 2 in some cases. I ziptie the bag of seed in a heavy duty plastic bag and just store it in the garage. I’ve still got cereal rye from 4 years ago left. Bought 1000 lbs at the time for next to nothing.

Savell, any respectable Southerner knows that a Ceasar salad ain’t got no radishes in it. Dont let them Austin boys influence your better judgement. grin

Im gonna mix in some daikon radishes or do you prefer it to be planted alone in a few plots?

Mr. Swamp, I run 5 lbs of radish, 2 lbs of turnips, 2 lbs of clover and 50 lbs of cereal rye per acre.

The clover is more for the Spring for the lactating does, turkeys and the Nitrogen fixing I get in the soil. I’ll kill everything off in June, plant buckwheat and then put in the Fall plots again the first week of Sept.

This fella still had a mouth full of radish tops when he was caped.

I hope it works out for you. Please give me an update as the season progresses.

Again, much more of a later season blend. I try to have it right for November when our ML season kicks off. During our bow season (all of Oct), deer are almost exclusively on beans or hard mast if we have it.

Nice pics

Planting my fall plots toward the end of the month.
Wet enough this year but run the risk of army worms wiping them out if you plant early September
