I've heard about these feral hogs called super pigs that like to zip around in Canada, chewin' on crops and stuff. Are they actually a thing or is it just something made up...? How are they different from regular wild pigs? Also, how rapidly is the regular wild hog population expanding and moving north?

Pig is a pig. The super pig claim is that they somehow "evolved" to survive Canadian winters and aren't your run of the mill southern razorbacks.

Fact is wild boar, the original one, is native to Northern Europe, Russia, and Asia, so cold winters are nothing to a pig.

There are different kinds of pigs for example there's the razor back pig that came from Russia so look up pictures and you will see the differences.

Loving every day as it comes.

Here in Montana the “experts” say we’re most likely going to get our first ones from Canada.

I shot one of those Russian pigs when hunting in the Tarsus Forest in Turkey. It was a 300 pound sow. That was the nastiest piece of meat I ever put in my mouth. It tasted like muddy sewage smells. It must have been eating something rotten.

I well remember my first encounter with one in Graf. I walk out of the toolroom into the motorpool and everyone is scattering. I see a small sow loose in the motorpool and I figure what the heck it's just a pig. She didn't look so small from the top of the 5 ton dump she run me up on, lol.

True that. I imagine what's fueling the superpig hype is the hogs that survive up there will be the big hairy ones that are more like the wild originals than our duke's mixture piney woods rooters.

It's a made up, hyperbolic description they're using to drum up fear in the unwashed.

Like said before, lots of breeds which were already fully adapted to surviving in harsh, cold environments. I think the "superpig" moniker is intended to convey the idea that they breed like rats and are difficult to eradicate. People here believe all kinds of crap about wild hog because the only information they get is from Youtube and the Discovery Channel, or from Uncle Bob who heard it from a friend of a friend.

The government gurus have pre-emptively made it illegal to shoot them here in Ontario to prevent busting up sounders and dispersing hogs over a wide area... instead of providing an opportunity for contractors (trappers) to deal with the threat ASAP while it still may be effective.

By next year, it will be "Jurassic Murderface Hawgs just showed up in Southwestern Ontario! Hide your kids! Hide your wife!"

Just happy to be here.

I suspect most of the wild hogs running around North America come from former domestic hogs that were either turned loose, or escaped. I was schooled by an Ozarks hillbilly once on the practice of "poling" hogs.....to assist them in eating acorns. Hogs were a not so much a source of income as a food source. There weren't many deer back then so hogs took their place. They are smart, adaptive and will eat almost anything, including dead bodies the big city mob wanted disposed of.

Frequent comment from my old neighbor Roy........"I ain't had this much fun since that time the hogs ate my little sister"

Still think there are ways to trap them in numbers, but not by dropping a cage on 5 or 10 of them at a time.

Total bs

Anyone with cognitive horsepower to tie their own shoes knows that there aren't going to be any hogs in regions with real winters.

If they were going to do it, they would have done it already.
