What's the best way to go about this? Float the wax on water or to use pure wax? Thanks

Pure wax.

Stop over cooking your meat! It isn’t gamey, it’s over cooked!

Here I can help and I’m dumb!!! Pure wax melt down on low! It’ll catch fire if you cook it too hot! Let the trap sit long enough to come to same temp as wax with a nail in the jaw. Then pull it out and let it sit on cardboard or something. Apparently you should not put traps in just straight outta the dye bath into the hot wax they should be allowed to cook first.
Would love to see pictures

You've never stepped faster then having a wax pot catch on fire. And if that happens have a lid to smother it.

Fully dry before going in the hot wax. Water and hot wax is bad mojo. Keep a lid handy when melting wax to smother should it flash. Let the traps come fully up to the temp of the wax before pulling them out.

The safest way to wax traps is in a double boil pot. Big pot with water in it and a smaller pot set inside the bigger pot with your wax in it, this way you with never scorch your wax or catch it on fire.

Buy you a temp. gun off Amazon for about $20 to keep check on the wax temp. You want it at about 230 degrees. Like has already been said you want to leave your traps in for about 30 sec. Your traps should look wet but have no build up of wax, if not leave them in a little longer.

I’ve got an old smart cooker that is my wax pot. No open flame and safe temp above melting point but not so hot that it combusts. I’ve waxed traps in that for years. Holds a lot of wax and I can do a couple big traps at a time or several smaller ones.
Leave em in u to the trap is same temp as the hot wax.

Works awesome and very safe method.

Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I would skip the cardboard thing unless you want to be scraping the trap off the cardboard. Just shake and hang to dry

I use double boiler.
Some say that is not hot enough.
They also say all wax melts
at the same temp.
So here we are.

Kids used to get candle making kits
for Christmas. Oh the horror lol.
