I posted on here a while back about a kibler woodsrunner that I put together a few months back, I have spent the majority of the summer figuring out the load that it liked the best. So today with 11 days left before my hunt starts, I decided to get it sighted in. The far right off target was the 1st shot, I adjusted the sights a little too much, the far left was the 2nd shot, I adjusted the sights a little bit more and then shot that 3 shot group. Pretty decent for me shooting a flintlock at 100 yards.

The picture needs to be rotated clock wise, the very top hole is supposed to be at the right.

That should get it done.

What load did you end up with?

I settled on Swiss 2f, 1/8" thick felted wool over powder wad, .020 pillow ticking patch, mink oil patch lube and a .535 round ball.

With shooting like that, I think you'll have a great hunt.

Love mine too. Dont think’ll ever use a modern rifle again. Been potent medicine on deer, elk, and bear.

What are hunting in 11 days?

I love the flint to much to switch, but Ive been telling everyone who is interested in our “new” muzzleloader season about it. Might be one of the finest hawkens a guy could put his hands on. Looks well thought out and he shed a few pounds on it as well

Lugnut thank you for rotating the picture.

DT that is a great looking gun, I kept mine pretty basic, as it was my first kit and my first flintlock. I am hunting mule deer. I won't say that I won't hunt with a modern rifle, but I will take the woodsrunner any chance that I get.

Tradervic I always wanted a nice hawken, and I was waiting for Jim to finally get one out, but I got sick of waiting and decided to try out the woodsrunner, after handling and shooting this rifle, I don't think I want a hawken anymore.
Savell, Charles, trapdog, and slowpoke thank you for the kind words, these flintlocks at least for me seem to have a steep learning curve, but I shoot better every time I take it out.

DT, my goal is to take a black bear with mine in the next year or so, I will probably have to travel to do it because Utah is a hard state to draw a bear tag in.

MT is a great state for bear. You cant bait here which is nice as the pressure is more evenly spread out. The license is cheap. If you can put on a few miles in the right spots, you might see a few. That bear was from last year and he dropped in his track from the .54. 7yr old boar

90 -100 grains of 2FF in a .54..is a good hunting load

Don't know if the felt wad is needed...don't think a .20 thick patch would burn through

Son of a grizz, those colonials sure are pretty, I hope you get one.

Nessmuk, the felt wad isn't needed, I just put it in there to tinker around with, but im not going to change anything this close to the hunt either.

Once you get really good with a flinter, if you ever switch back to modern, it'll seem alomst like cheating.

Good luck on your hunt.

Well I have got back from my hunt, I didn't get anything as I was being picky, I hunted a 180" buck the entire hunt I had him within range twice, once at 46 yards, another at 97 and couldn't make it work either times. I was able to get one of my friends his first flintlock buck at 37 yards it was a nice 3x4.
