I think you're right that it's a horse chestnut.

To grow them, the easiest thing to do is to just bury it about an inch deep, cover it with wire to keep rodents from digging it up and then remove the wire in late Spring. Last Fall, we did close to 1000 buckeyes that way. Anyone need any buckeye trees?

What good is a buckeye tree other than to name a filthy football team after? Dumbest of all time name for a team. Rather fitting now that I think about it.
Go Green, go State.
Serious question though. What are these trees good for?

$15.00 to $20.00 each as first year saplings. My nursery made about $1500.00 on buckeyes this year so far.

Ohio's state tree is the Buckeye. They are pretty trees and are used ornamentally. The buckeye itself is used in medicine. The wood is strong, easy to work and light weight. People think buckeyes are lucky and often carry them in their pockets. The nuts are frequently used as game pieces. The game conkers is played with buckeyes or horse chestnuts, which are similar. Ohio State fans make jewelry out of them. Many Ohio State fans plant a buckeye tree in their front yard. I did. Single nuts usually sell for 50 cents to a dollar.

Roy, PM me your address and I'll send you some buckeyes to plant. We were going to collect some buckeyes today, but will be going next week instead.

Peel off the outer spiky husk on the horse chestnuts.
