Plant 'em they said...they'll make acorns in 5 to 7 years they said....

Well...20+ years later, one tree did make a handful of acorns this time...1st time ever.

Nice. Sorry it took so long.

Some folks just put out a pile of corn I hear.

Feeding/baiting is legal here, so yeah, that's done too.

Been renovating three old spin feeders I acquired....got one of em ready to go.

Have used gravity feeders for years, but with CWD discovered about 40 miles north of me, Im phasing out those and replacing with spin feeders on skids that I can move around as needed.

That’s interesting Mr. Swamp.

Mine are 5 yrs old now (2 yr bare root and 3 yrs in the ground). Hoping I’ll get something in the next 3-4 years.

My Chestnuts are the same age and I got a handful from 80% or so of the trees I planted last year that are the same age. Nothing this year though.

Oh I know.

Just saying a pile of corn doesn’t take 20 years to produce.

But…. That is still cool you planted trees. Always good to have more trees.

We have been having a massive akern crop fall here this season. Same as a couple years ago. A man could slip and fall on all the acorns on the ground.

Folks will be complaining about it. Since they don’t see deer at the corn feeders.

I've planted about 15 sawtooths. All were bare-root 2ft trees when planted. Had only one tree that got to 40' tall & 12" in diameter.....never made an acorn. Hurricane Helene broke it in half. All others just never amounted to anything, except the one that just made a few acorns. Its about 25' tall, but only 6" or 7" in diameter.

All the other trees either died out or were destroyed by the last logging ops....but they were never gonna amount to anything.

I've always wondered (and researched) why I cant get em to do anything. I did learn that planting them in light sandy soils is not near as good as in soil that is a little darker and heavier. Also, they love full sunlight.....even partial shade is a limiting factor.

Ive seen sawtooths planted locally in business parking lot areas in town that are loaded with acorns every fall.

Well that sucks. Must not have liked the soil or something.

Ive struggled with these dang sawtooths.

Now, pear trees have been a success. I have a mini-orchard and a couple other 2-tree locations. They all make pears and this year they were loaded.

I dont see how a turkey can swallow one of these sawtooths....see pic above.

They will pick up the pieces that deer drop.

I got a handfull of seedling sawtooths from the dixie deer classic years ago. I have one in my yard with about a six inch diameter trunk now that has never made an acorn. The rest i planted in the woods at home near an old pear tree. All of them were taken out when a main transmission power line was ran thru here. Good luck with the buck

Im thinking the sawtooth craze in wildlife management several years ago was a big flop.

White oaks. That’s the winner.

They like hickory here also.

And don’t forget corn piles
