I've seen more dead mink on the roads, than I have seen in many years. I've also seen around 10 dead weasels. I've seen three dead mink since Thursday. It could be because the numbers are up, but it also could be because it's been very dry here and they are on the move looking for wet areas to hunt.

I took my buyer a skinned mink last season. That was February and he said that was the first mink through his door all season.

Does all this mean supply of wild mink is limited? Therefore will prices increase?

Most of the mink we have here have escaped from mink farms which then breed in the wild. We catch black, brown, white, silver, pastel. Not sure I've ever caught a truly wild mink.

We've had a drought in SE Wi for 3 years, but last year it started getting back to normal.
Never seen a population drop, actually the muskrat and mink picked up last year.
I was actually watching a big male across the river Saturday evening on the far bank while a muskrat swam up stream under my dock.

Evidently mink populations vary greatly according to what area of the country you’re in. 50 would be an exceptional catch here where you might get several hundred in other areas.

I don’t know if there’s ever really been a sizeable population in my area..I never really did target them on purpose..
I get roughly 15-20 per year as incidentals in pockets and at muskrat holes

It depends on the amount of water and how long it’s been around here, they bounce back quickly under the right conditions. During one wet spell several years back while transferring inmates to various jails and institutions around the state they were everywhere you found water. Seeing 2-3 hit on the roads near water was common then. Even seen a pair of them hit in opposite sides of the road in the Sioux Falls city limits by the airport.

Beside low prices all good reasons not to target mink right now.
