I’ve tried googling and YouTube videos before I asked this question here. Yesterday while replacing the starter.. the wires to the oil level sensor were pulled out of the plug.. snapped totally out.. I was able to locate a replacement and spliced it in.. Apparently something is wrong… either I wired it wrong, the plug is defective, or the sensor itself was damaged..because my low oil light keeps flashing.
My question is this… does this only tell you that you are low on oil,,, or does it mechanically affect something else in the motor? If it’s just an indicator light problem,, I’m not worried about it…but if it affects something else I’d definitely like to know.. thanks guys.

GM single wire oil pressure sensors are also prone to leaks
it tells you oil pressure
there isn't a level sensor in the pan , it just assumes no pressure = no oil
last one I replaced the sensor was 13 dollars so not bad. that was about 11 months ago
when you follow a GM product leaving a trail of oil drips , generally oil pressure sensor and almost always right over the starter , the leak also causes premature starter failure.

I thought I remembered a level sensor in the side of the pan, just forward of the starter.

I stand corrected however if he broke the pressure sensor cable , I suspect that is what is making the light come on.
it is worth fixing the sensor and getting the cable wired right as the first move, in my opinion

Pete , this had 2 wires.. It’s below the starter this is how bad the wires popped out.

To answer your original question, that is only a level sensor. Shouldn't hurt the engine to drive it that way. Unless you run out of oil.........
GCP, yes, the pressure sensors are a common failure on GM trucks. Carry a spare in the glove box and get good at swapping them.
the Olds mini van if the manifold wasn't hot , they were easy enough to change blind once you knew what you were feeling for
the first time was pull starter so you could see it as it sat right above the starter and below the exhaust manifold. did that one in a parking garage in MKE

Yep like everyone one has said that is the level sensor. The oil pressure sending unit is located on top on the block at the rear of the intake manifold. They are a very common failure on the 4.8/5.3/6.0 gm engines. Not bad to change out but is done mostly by feel since it is tucked back and hard to actually see.
Your entitled to oxygen. Everything else is earned.
I had to get a longer dipstick cause it wouldnt reach the oil any longer.
Yes, I was wondering what was wrong with the good old fashioned "oil level indicator"? Also known as a dip stick. An oil pressure gauge and dip stick will tell you all there is to know......and pressure gauge 100X better than the idiot lights so many engine applications use. Now doing some of my own engine work, coming to realize that oil is the life blood of an engine.....and oil pump is the heart that circulates it.
Once upon a time had a Jeep CJ with Chevy straight 6 that somehow lost a quart of oil per tank of gas.........now spoiled by Toyota engines that have as much oil in them after 5,000 miles as they did when they started.
