Magellan never had scurvy on his voyage because his cabin boy made him toast with quince preserves for breakfast. His crew did not enjoy the quince preserves and they all got scurvy.

That all I know about a quince except that the bush has thorns.

You can eat them raw but you don't want to. Hard and slightly astringent. They do make a good jelly though and there recipes for poaching them in syrups or cooking down into a paste.

Grand dad had one for jelly. As he said you can always add more sugar to anything to make it passable.

Related to pears and can be used as dwarfing rootstock for pear.
