Love them or hate them? I can’t stand the smell. The jelly smells like doo doo. People rave about it, or hate it. We pick about a gallon each fall to make ketchup from. Here is an easy way to collect them. Just bring a colander? ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/09/full-6321-270040-img_6626.jpeg)

We loved them when we lived in Alaska. One trick that will help with the smell when cooking is to freeze them first. I don’t know what the change is but it works. If you steam them or cook them fresh they smell like a locker room. If you’ll freeze them first there isn’t any of the dirty socks smell.
I never tried making ketchup but we always made a few batches of jelly. I think I have one jar left.
Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

The smell is always in the field or from what someone else brought. The berries flavor is amazing. We love the ketchup over moose, especially meatloaf.

They smell like very poor hygiene in very close quarters, frozen or not. I once made liquor from them following the recipe for arctic bramble and it stank so bad it was dubbed butthole syrup, but the men still drank it. Even cranberries taste better. I put branches with frozen berries in my marten boxes or right next to them for visual attraction. Nice! I put boxes where there are berries, lol.
