How much do you plant? We planted 12 cloves last year and ran out way soon. Tonight we planted 48.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

We did 20 this year. (Last weekend) usually wait until the first week of October or so.

Do you cover the ground for freeze protection? I put down about 4 inches of straw last year over my garlic.

We wait for the second week of October. Te soil gets covered with seaweed and plastic sheeting until we thaw. Too much rain and snow over the course of our winters to not protect te soil.

Yeah, usually put down 3 inches of compost. Really lose like so it doesn’t compact. Seems to work well. Usually do that around December. We don’t get super cold till then really.

Planting 150 cloves mid October. I mulch with 6" of leaves around mid November when it starts to freeze up and take them off when the snow melts.
Some people leave the mulch on, the garlic comes up through it easily if not compressed too tight.

Leaf mulch is the best bet for most I’ve heard.

I know it’s different here in Alaska but we planted 750 cloves in the spring and had a good harvest at the end of August.

Will plant about 120 cloves but sell some next year at farmers market. Used to plant first week of Oct., now into Nov. Things are changing. Cover with 4” of CLEAN straw which is difficult to find. Not all straw is born equal!

Lets see some pictures of garilc rows and how you keep them pretty... the loose compost is wide and high and no weeds I'm assuming? What works best over the years? Maybe hill it a little?

I planted 50 cloves last year. My thought was that it should give me enough garlic for the years with enough leftover to plant this fall (which I'm doing sometime this week). When I plant, I clean out the chicken coop at the same time and cover the garden bed with the poop/wood chip mix.

For a number of years I had one price on my bulbs at the market. Human nature customers would take the the larger bulbs leaving me with smaller (cloves) each fall to plant. Only took me 5 yrs to figure it out. Yeah I’m a real genius!

Never planted garlic. May give it a whirl.. Just hit the farmers market and grab some for planting? Or is there certain ones for planting vs eating?

Eat the small, plant the big.
It is as hard to grow as weeds.
I plant on Columbus Day.
This time mulch will be hemlock noodles.
I've planted in spring too.

The main thing is,
plant the cloves in the dirt.
Right side up.
To make it harder use the phone.

Never planted any before but looking into it. Do y'all like hard neck or soft neck best and why? Also, if planted in mid Oct when will it be ready to harvest? Thinking of using one of my tomato beds but I would need to get the garlic out of there by mid April or May at the latest.

Hard neck here. No place around here even offers soft neck seed ... Plant in October, harvest in July. Guessing that mid April or May would not be long enough, even in AR

Wonderful Wife has some Garlic she bought at a local farmers market and has stored it in a glass jar in the kitchen. Can we use that for planting for next year?

Thanks!

When I used to help my grandpa plant garlic,, he went big..
Rows were around 30 feet long and he had around 20-25 rows.
He ate a few cloves every day and sold some.
He would put it in the microwave with a paper towel..
The paper towel kept the garlic from producing an arc

Why did he eat the cloves? Mosquito repellent?

A friend carried cloves in the truck "in case"
he got pulled over.
He did, the cop smelled garlic and beer,
and supposedly beat him up.
Some years later same guy died in
dui fleeing crash.

I planted last year for the first time. Followed internet instructions. Planted mid to end of October (Wisconsin climate). Let them grow till the scapes grew. Cut the scapes off (and ate them). Once the scapes are cut, bulbing will start from what I was told. Let them go for 2 maybe three weeks after scapes were cut and dug the dirt around the plant to check. I let them go a little longer and checked again and started harvesting.

I eat a raw clove every day now that I grow it. Much of the stuff in the store comes from over seas. Read labels before you buy.
