The Yankees paying big money to come down and get em a giant gar … we used to keep them in check by bow fishing…. Now they’re protected and becoming a major nuisance…. Thanks a lot

How hard are they to catch, Savell? I'm one of the Yankees that's always wanted to catch one.
… ride on down with the rest of them I guess… your guide will put a chunk of buffalo on a circle hook and throw it into an eddy on the Trinity River … you’ll catch within an hour likely… and have a nice picture to show your friends after he nooses it
… all while our eating fish population goes to crap lol

Only one i ever ate a ol boy from the delta of ms (they aint rite in the head) caught and i helped him cut the back straps out of it. Why they don't make cowboy boots out of those hide's is a mystery, tougher than any leather. Taste like alligator, stringy and chewy if your into that sort of thang.

So what is the appeal here --- people paying to catch a fish -- just to say they did ?? I'm all about the groceries .. if they aint fit to eat -- I'm out.

Well phooey,,, that sucks eggs,,, can’t keep an alligator gar over 48 inches? Ain’t no point in even going to make a trip now. Absolutely ruined now. Always wanted to have a full mount alligator gar no less than 5 feet. I don’t want to go down there to shoot babies.

Spotted Gar were imported and stocked in the Allegheny River. I've caught two. The smaller one was half mouth. They thrash a lot with those teeth. The other fishies did not act oppressed.

The only fish we get close to that size is sturgeon........ Better not fat-mouth Foxkidd too much -- get a fish that big and his cutting skills will come in handy !!

I side with Savell on this. Gar are a trash fish and I see no good reason to protect them. When running setlines on the Mississippi years ago if gar found your line they'd just steal the bait and you'd wind up with nothing. If we caught one we'd run their nose in the rib of the boat bust it and throw it back in. They'd look like a periscope swimming for a bit. I had a guy bring in gar balls once to work. He was originally from Alabama and thought they were edible. IMO they're not.

My old man had a story about catching one years ago on the Mississippi, on the Iowa border. He was chasing flatheads. His rod doubled over and he proceeded to have a heck of a fight. When the fish got boat side, he knew it was a gar, but had no idea what sort. Being the sort of man he is, he unloaded his pistol into its head and cut the line. Nobody around there could ID it based on his description, and he never knew what it was until I was old enough to have an interest in them and showed him a picture.

Well, crap. I always wanted to have me a 100 lb plus Gator Gar on my Man-room wall. Looks like Texas is out. Sorry Savell, I guess I will have to bribe Bud G. from the Louisiana swamps now.

… shoot they get a lot bigger than that … the huge ones will just tear up your tackle and be gone … wish I had taken some pictures of the 8 lb range catfish they shred on the line
… wouldn’t bother me if they all floated up dead tomorrow
