I just shot a rabbit with my new Henry... and, I've shot plenty of rabbits that had fleas but usually it was in the middle of winter and it was cold, so the fleas were all deep in the fur and I didn't have to deal with them while skinning. The one I just shot has critters climbing all over the outside fur, and I was wondering if there's a way to skin em without having to worry about fleas hopping on me. I know most (if not all) of you are going to say, just skin it and then take a shower, but I was wondering if there's a better way, a way to keep them off of me in the first place... like freezing it first or something

Thank you!

p.s. I'll also post a pic of the rabbit later smile

Throw it in a bag with permethrin flea powder or some other premise spray! Vet Kem makes a good one you can buy online..

I would not use poison on anything I was going to eat.

Nice your rifle is being used.

I do have some flea spray that I use for varmints that I'm not planning on eating, but I was a little concerned about the fact that I'll be eating the rabbit... should I still do that for something I'm going to be eating??

Sorry I should have mentioned that I was going to eat it in the original post

I put flea covered rabbits in the freezer, in a feed sack for about 20 minutes, before skinning them. The fleas quickly go dormant and often fall off in the sack. Those that don't fall off can be pretty easily brushed off into the sack.

The vet kem spray is very nice to have around for future reference. Doesn’t make a mess like powder and works wonders in a short time

KeithC, freezing it for a half hour seemed to do the trick. They were just crawling around lethargically when I pulled it out of the deep freezer and didn't seem to want to jump on me. Thanks again for the tip!

You're welcome. You can brush the fleas off with your hands, but a soft bristle brush works better. I just leave the brushed off fleas in the feed sack, in the freezer and they are all dead the next day to throw out.

Yea you can buy on Amazon I believe. Meant for use in the home when you have an infestation. Safe around pets once it is dry
