I am working on some coni stands for my beaver traps. I am wondering if triggers up or down makes a difference. My plan is to use these in the runs to dens and for caster mound and trail sets. We have to have half the trap submerged to be legal, figured I would go a little deeper to be safe. What do you all think would be best?

When trapping beaver the wires are usually on the bottom

I put triggers on all my conibears on the bottom so the dog or trigger don't cause fur damage to the back of the animal; marten in particular.

Quite often you will get rubbed fur from the triggers as the beaver struggles before expiring. It makes a big difference to the fur buyer if that mark is in the middle of the back or along the cut line in the belly.

If you are using stands some conibears will slide all the way down to the trap dog with triggers on the bottom. I would prefer to run them on the bottom but cannot with my stands. This is a project i need to take care of this winter.

If you are fur trapping, keep them on the bottom. Otherwise it doesn’t matter.

Most of the time mine are on top. I have been using Belisle traps for quite a while, and can't remember having fur damaged by the trap. The only time I have put the trigger on the bottom is either when using pedals, (which for the last 15-20 years for marten and mink has been 90%-95% of sets). With an extreme T-trigger set on a 330, "up-side down, (trigger on bottom), will sometimes fool a trap-shy beaver. Other than that, whatever suits the set.

I set my triggah wires like this..on the bottom.

It's just more inviting and the beaver has no triggers in his face.

On the bottom. And cut them about in half and crimp with a double ferrule. You should never have to service that trigger again.
