Anybody got any advice on how to plant chestnuts
Had a friend give me some nuts and I’m wondering how to get them to grow, anything special I need to do other than stick them in some pots?

Pots are good if your gonna bring them inside, otherwise, plant them directly in the soil where you want them to grow. Need to protect them from tree rats! mad Don't ask!

Bob Stehli has I believe the largest commercial chestnut farms in the US. He's in the Ohio Nut Growers Association, that I'm in.

It's strange for me watching the videos because I've met most of the people in them and can even recognize the voices of the people off camera

I only have a not so grand total of 3 chestnut trees, out of seeds from Bob's orchard.

Personally, I'm not real fond of chestnuts. I have never had a good one roasted. I ate some raw chestnuts at the Farm Science Review. We had two booths set up there. The chestnuts are better raw.

Thanks fellows, I’ll check the videos out. I’ll be planting them for the wildlife.

American chestnuts are good both raw and roasted. The main problem with European chestnuts it they they tend to have the pellicle (inner bitter skin) convoluted into the nut.

The main issue with planting chestnuts is they cannot dry out after harvest or the germ in killed. They should be placed in the fridge in a damp paper towel and kept until early spring.

Been a few years and memory isn't vivid about it but if I remember right I put the harvested nut in a shallow 2" flat pan filled with dampened regular potting soil in the refrigerator for 6 months , at which time roots had started to grow. Took them and transfered to 12 inch flower pots ( the black plastic ones.) Advise putting a coffee filter in bottom of large pot prior to filling with potting soil and single chestnut start. Keep potting soil moist but not soaking wet. An occasional watering with Miracle grow doesn't hurt.
We started with 50 nuts in 2 pans ended up with 48 tree starts
