News of likely tariffs against China sent the market into a freefall today. Do you all think this is a short-term reaction to bad news, or the start of a longer correction? Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts about it.

It's just a casino now, not based off facts anymore just pixie dust and fairy farts so who know's. Im just waiting for the next housing market crash, 450 k dollar house's and 100 k dollar new pick up's that won't last 5 years made out of junk by over paid union workers. Smells like 2008 all over again to me.
Not my circus, not my clowns.

China plans to withhold rare earth minerals from the US so shots fired by China first. It’s a shame we put ourselves in a position that we depend on China so much but the politicians sold us out years ago. If we never bought another thing from them ever again I’d like that but that’s not realistic unfortunately.

Probably a good thing long term, we have the minerals, we just need a bit of urgency to get them.

buying back shares so companies don't pay out near the dividends on open shares and also it raises values so more bonuses etc. to the higher ups, so I guess to them it is not a fairy world, it is a way to make money for them and it also helps their balance sheet for loans, interest rates etc.
Bryce Today was not market-wide buybacks! Had nothing to do with buybacks. The pain began when China cracked down, (again), on raw earth materials, and (again), bogus pressure on Tech companies. Trump rightfully retaliated with tariffs. After the markets closed, it got even worse. Monday is not likely to be nice sailing.

LOL, Tman never fails to entertain. On here we have people speculating about the cause of the fall, whether it was a significant enough of a slide to even be considered a fall, whose fault it is, whose fault it isn't, whether its cause for concern, displays of TDS, accusations of TDS, and even accusations of fraud.
What we don't have is even one single person attempting to answer what I asked in the original post, which was whether or not y'all thought this was a short-term reaction to a news headline/social media post OR the start of a longer-term correction.

Short term,
It'll start going up again until more tariffs are Imposed then it'll drop again for a short period.
At least that's been the recent history I've observed.

Its a reaction to social media blabbering liken it to toilet paper shortages cars with no chips shortages vegetable seed shortages seems like every 10 years or so the stock market dumps started happening when employers elimimated pensions and replaced them with 401k's My 2 cents is stocks were cashed in to invest in the "Gold Rush" putting gold over 4 grand in less than a year with speculation to go even higher Welcome to the New housing market

I don't know Hippie. I guess I don't really feel that the rally is over yet... but at the same time I don't think the market is gonna bounce back this coming week to where it was. So, I guess I'd say I think it'll be relatively short-term, but not short-term enough to help me out, lol.
There's a bit of a perfect storm brewing... the Chinese tariff issue, the government shutdown, the delay or possible cancellation of releases of economic data that the Fed relies on, the nagging question of whether the tariffs will influence Fed rate cut decisions....
I did read somewhere that one of the inflation gauges used by the Fed is still slated to be released before the next FOMC meeting, so that helps. On Tuesday, Fed Chair Powell is set to speak at a convention... if the market likes what he has to say, it could help.
If the tariffs, at 100%, actually DO go into effect on Nov. 1? All bets are off. I don't think most people realize how much that is going to hurt businesses. And consumers. I realize something needed to be done once China issued its threats in regard to rare earth minerals, but the best outcome for us would be if the two countries are able to reach some sort of reasonable trade agreement.

There is nothing the average person in the market can do except watch how it moves up or down, until they have a balance in the market to not have them worry about what it does, I would venture a guess not many in this crowd have that kind of interest in the market. That figure is a very substantial amount in my view !
Asking if it will go further down, sure, will it continue to grow sure, how fast will it do either solely depends on so many factors it usually makes people sick to think about it.
If you are not high enough in the market trading that one worries about up or down in a short term or a long term, you are learning one thing, that patience in the market has a cost, and it's terribly difficult to learn when you have achieved it !

Well, IMO, I wish we were a bit more prepared prior to deciding to do that. China's rare earth minerals are in everything we use. We cannot pick up the slack of the loss of their product in the next 6 months. Maybe in the next 6 years.

If we shut down their ability to sell to us they won’t last that long. Which is a win for all free countries, and also hurts our “friends” selling them ag goods on the side. Win win! We will be alright, just not fat and lazy as we’ve been for far too long…

Every Chinese person is expendable, no matter the age. It is why they are so much better than us on the long game. They will endure suffering in the name of preservation of the Xi dynasty. And xi will be most appreciative, or kill you because you will not "sacrifice". America does not have the stomach for the long game.

Orange man bad!!!! I guess you're referring to the DOW which was actually down 1.8% but let's ignore Nasdaq that was down close to 4% at close and much more after..... I'm guessing you have little or nothing invested in equities.... And WHERE did I say "orange man bad"???? Not worried much about it. My stash is put away in a trust consisting of equities for my grandkids when they turn 35. I, myself will never need it unless I live to be 110.

It has been interesting year for sure. I have an AA of 80/10/10 Equity/bond/high yielding CD. I looked today I'm up 9.7% YTD so still a very good year despite and sideways market year.

My is all growth I don't contribute from a W2 or buy anymore. I just ride the waves with my portfolio and never rebalance. I bought and held for 38 years and never have sold one stock to this day. A lot of power in compounding plus time.

Had some good buys during the dip at the beginning of the year. Got a few looser as well. Had some great suggestions on things to look into and see what i thought from one of out smart members here and done well on those also. Wish I would have bought more.
