Saw this over on reddit ... Peron has a grey fox chilling on the roof about 20ft away from there chickens and apparently hazing is better then ....I'll just let y'all red it lol

Back Yard Chickens has too long been taken over by a vocal minority of petaphiles. They have ruined it.

Probably not USDA but the advice on a coop is good.
Wifes friend has lost a few to bald eagles. No telling what else. They wander her yard all day. My wife saves table scraps for them. Likes to go over and feed them
My dad depended a dog to bark. Let his out every day too. Shot everything that might threaten them. Hawks owls stray dogs skunks whatever showed up. Still lost a few.

Daughter keeps two great pyreneese to protect birds. They dont lose many. Cats keep the rat numbers down. I would not guess how many chickens ducks geese and peacocks they have. Pretty good second income for them.

Haze it. Then daze it with a whack up side the head with the ole 22

Part of free ranging chickens is loss to predators/birds of prey

Needs to clean that vally out before they get water damage

And whoever posted that nonsense about hazing needs to have a water hose used on them and I don't mean getting sprayed by it

You would be shocked at the number of bunny huggers in the NWCO biz.

Hazing does work in specific scenarios, like denning under a shed. Haze mom and shell move the pups elsewhere. If they're coming into food, doesnt work well, if at all.

Grey fox are so rare here I would shoot the chickens an keep the fox

I have only seen 3 in my life and im 45. Reds are not supper abundant but I did let a few live on the farm longer than good since should have let me. I enjoyed watching them. BUT eventually they got bracelets.

we run a mobile coop built on a 16' car trailer with 1020' of electro net fence we circle the coop . Used ro run the goats and chickens together like that moving around the farm. Workes very well .
Had a few birds of prey grab a few over the years and coon grab some if they decide to roos outside the coop and fence Typically young birds when first moved out with the big girls.

But we sold the goats and I got lazy not needing to mover the coop to keep the goats in fresh weeds and the net is over grown and knocked down and birds free ranging around the yard.

Loosing some birds is part of it. I would rather loose some and have them able to go get bugs , seeds and vegetation in a clean environment, than have them locked in a run of bare dirt and chicken poo. I have done it both ways.

But if they start crapping on the porch its tile to move the coop further from the house.
