My wife and I started using one last year and it’s been a game changer for us on the line especially during freezing temps. Just curious how many other guys use them on their line?

I use one for frozen ground and for pulling beaver dams. They come in pretty handy.

Requirement for frozen ground trapping.

I use a full size and a half size, both have rubber grips and plastic handles. Everything is hard as a rock. A must have tool.

Never used them on the trapline. Used them a lot when we built trail and tread on the Ice Age Trail here in WI.

I modified/built one (yellow handle tool) for cat trapping and it has been, as you say, a game changer. I cut down the hoe blade, and the axe blade as well. That made the tool lighter, easier to swing and easier to carry. I also cut off about a foot of the handle, which allows me to swing it one-handed (at least, at the beginning of the day; by afternoon I need two hands). It's great because it digs and cuts brush, lops off branches and lifts buried rocks with ease. Wouldn't trap without it now.

Used to pack two of em (two is one, one is none sort of deal).

Than I discovered a rotary hammer and a spade bit.

I've got an old drywall hammer in my bag as well that has it's time and place on the line.

I use one with a digging mattock on one side and a pick on the other. Not sure what its called, but after digging the trap bed, I turn to the pick side and drive the pick deep into the trap bed. Then I got 10" of hole to start my disposable into. Works great, especially when you only have the top 4-8" of ground frozen. Now you have a hole through the frozen ground and are into the soft ground with the disposable.

No pulling dams for this guy, but still always have one with.

Pick maddock or pick hoe

I have a “wedge banger” I use on wildland fires to tree felling wedges and still have a tool to dig line. It’s a Pulaski with the axe blade cut off and a piece of heavy bar stock welled on. Used it a couple times to make sets in frozen ground. Worked pretty good.
