My 4th set ever. Coyote season opened today in MI. Seriously though open to any constructive criticism to make it better.

Got Dunlap Wad Paint in one hole and venison pieces in the other hole.

Trap is just to the left of the green leaf and to the right of the tiny stick on the other side.

There is nothing wrong with the set. If someone says there is something wrong and you make a catch not good for them. The only thing that might help is some subtle backing. I know the tree is there but looks like a bit of a distance.

Are your holes angled towards your trap?

Slightly.

We are so dry here right now, making the holes was the hardest part with the drill auger because there was no moisture in the soil to hold things together.
It was also hard to "pack" any soil around the traps because we are all sand here and in a drought so nothing would really "pack." It was just moving sand around.

As long as your trap is bedded well, you have a chance. Some guys will say this and others will say that. I think it looks great for your fourth set. Keep making sets. Keep experimenting. Have fun with it.

Here is my two cents….

I’d make the set closer up under the tree. With the holes in the brown pine needles. I’d have the trap covered with the same needles. Id place the trap just outside the drip line of the tree. I’d angle the holes toward the trap. But that is just my personal preference. Keep up the good work.

For me its too open. From the pic it looks like the coyotes can work the set in almost any direction. My thinking is you will miss more than you catch at a set like that. My suggestion would be a natural backing that already there to guard the back, maybe a small weed or clump of grass to guard one side and a pile of dirt or small rock to discreetly suggest not to step here. From your pic id have the holes closer to each other and trap closer to holes. Just my 2 cents. You dont want to "block" a coyote in but subtle guiding suggesting step here will help
Be an observer and thinker and the coyotes will teach you. Advice only goes so far when coyote trapping, experience is the real teacher.

I'd put a log chunk or a rock between the tree and the trap to keep the varmint from approaching from the back.

OR....lop off a branch from the tree and position it as a backing...needles slightly between holes.
Or a guy can drag a branch from a dead tree over to the set and do the same thing....tree looks like it MIGHT have been planted there??

Nope not planted. Just mowed around. But it's in the middle of 80 acres along a 2 track.
