I still hunt and have used grunt calls to great effect. Have yet had one come into rattling but that's probably on me. Best piece of advice I got was you can call all you want but if the deer are not there, its not going to work.
Couple examples; Walking slow along a dry marsh and see an ear twitch, move away and up, keeping an eye on the area. Get to a spot and can tell there's a buck bedded down but can only make out a bit of his antlers. Give it about 40 mins (think deer have a 20-30 min memory) and hit him with the softest doe call I can. See his head snap over, couple more soft doe calls and then two quick excited buck grunts. That's it he has to stand up to see what's going on.
Headed to an area where i thought a specific buck was bedding down but was not sure. Set up with the wind in my face, beaver dam to my right and a small pond in front and to my left. Pine trees, marsh and then a long maple ridge on the other side of the beaver dam. Gave it about an hour(see above, about memory). Couple doe calls, followed by a buck grunt and a nice buck is immediately walking out of the pines heading for the beaver dam. He had to have watched me walk in but since i was out of sight to him it all worked.
Of course other times did everything described and nothing. One thing i have yet to be able to do is to get a deer to stop running away from me with a call, anyone have a trick for that shoot me a DM.
