In my first ever coyote set, I caught a small skunk last night/this morning.

Would you remake the set in the same sport or move?

Thanks guys. How on earth do you guys skin these skunks. I dispatched without it spraying or so I think, but dang do they still smell so BAD....

I skin then wash the pelt with baking soda, peroxide and Dawn dish soap. Like others said, re-make the set. Congrats, it's a good year to catch skunks.

i skin them very carefully when they are fully loaded. do it in your fur shed if you have one do not do it in the garage your mom or wife will not be happy lol. after i get around the vent and back legs i like to extract the essence with a syringe and store it in a 4oz bottle.

i also wash the pelt like wild idaho i just make my mixture in a 5 gallon bucket

wife will let me wash coyote and coon beaver and muskrat in the washer but not the skunks. youd be surprised at how clean they come out just using cold water. i only wash the real dirty ones when its too cold to use the hose outside. usually only a few pelts a year go in the washer.

Thanks guys. I do have it hanging in my fur shed right now. Headed out in a bit to be brave and give it a go.

Make sure your knife is sharp, you don't want to be working around the vent with a dull knife that you have to use a lot of pressure to force to cut. Otherwise it isn't difficult, just take your time and go slow, speed will come with practice.

And yes, remake the set there, you can make a new set outside the catch circle if you want, but definitely remake the existing set also.

Now I have a skunk essence jar.... who would have thought.

Here's the remake set. The clump of red grass behind the two holes was a nice full clump about 2.5 ft tall, but the skunk sure did a number on it.

Reset after any catch. My gosh if I had a dollar for every coyote I caught after a skunk catch. Same with possum, and coon, and badger, or about anything else even another coyote catch. Remakes just get better and better.

That set will catch again as long as the wind is good and a critter is in the vicinity.
