Started working for the old man as a sherpa and tool hander, lol, started commercial hard clamming at 16, did a short stint as a butcher, then a long stint as a Bay Constable for the town....all along still worked the bay, clamming, crabbing, eeling etc...retired in 2011, and right back on the boat on the bay to present times....right now green crabbing for the blackfish addicts.
After a pacemaker, 2 hips, 2 knees, and overall arthritis, still chugging along.... grin

Mostly a tradesman my whole life. Had a stint where I did some security work while going to school for policing, was almost a corrections officer then realized there's no way i'd enjoy that despite the pay, so I joined the infantry reserves. got to do some cool stuff there. was going to reg force (full time canadian forces) but met my now wife.

Went back to the trades continuing the carpentry I left off on.

Got to a point where I Was doing everyone's job and I realized I wasn't looking for a paycheck or a job I even liked I would go through jobs to see if there was anyone there that could teach me anything. I rarely got put with the lead guys I would be given an apprentice or two and running another site so after awhile I realized it was 60$ here to open a business so I did.

First year was spotty figuring out taxes and trying to stay busy. vast majority was word of mouth. second year coming to a close and I can't do jobs fast enough to get to the next. some nutcake customers, some crappy jobs but I've never been stiffed a paycheck so far and end of day everyone is happy

Mostly do window & door installs & service work (used to do warranty work for a lot of manufacturers) custom trim work, custom hardwood staircases, Decks, sometimes I'll do siding (i hate plastic/vinyl try to stay away from it and just do wood like clapboard or cedar shake) and sometimes I'll do renovations and odd jobs.

Been trying to hire a part time guy but everyone who applies their last name is singh. what do you do?

Figuring I may just drop any two man jobs which will be a lot of my window and door work and just stay solo. Between markup and labour can usually pull about 1K CAD a day (keep in mind so far january and february are fairly dead so far) give or take. sometimes a loss sometimes a lot better, but it allows me to spend time with my family and maybe retire my wife in a year or two.

Also very satisfying making my own schedule. Just took a random few days off I didn't book for so I could dye & wax traps and set up deer blinds.

The man is deceased now but was the president of a bank south of me and one heck of a mink trapper. Saw him many times standing above a creek on a culvert checking traps with a suit and tie lol

I’ve only ever fished/hunt/trap

I’ld fish for 4-5 months straight 7 days a week

Take a month-6 weeks off,,,trap and hunt

Then do it again

Canada,Alaska,Mongolia,Argentina

Every thing was provided room/board/ transportation

Never made a lot, but didn’t spend a dime

Saved/invested everything for 30 years

I don’t work anymore,,,,,I just fish/hunt/trap on my own schedule now

I lived the dream!!

Owned and ran a machine shop, machining industrial ceramics for the past 40 yrs. Have a taxidermy business as a side gig for 20 yrs and will do that full time once I get up the nerve to pull the trigger on shutting down the machine shop. Been a trapper since 1968, and look forward to doing more out of state trapping in the future.

Most know what I do for a living. I started trapping on our little farm and around our rural community farms around 1964. After high school in 1969 I just missed the draft for Vietnam. If I wasn't accept at the University I would have been off on another career since my draft number was very low.

I went on to higher education and graduated with a BS Degree in Education & Kinesiology with a Minor in Psychology.

I did 3 years pre med after college and found it wasn't my true calling. Mom and dad werent happy with me as I remember.

I was doing some trapping throughout my higher education period in my limited free time. I spent many weeks in the hills of W. Virginia chasing beaver, bobcat and deer hunting.

I had a growing interest in lure formulation in the late 60's and early 70's. In those early years I developed some of our current products that are now 50 plus years old this year.

In 1975 I started selling our lure line Jameson's Ultra Blend Scent Co. and began advertising our product line. I also began attending trapping conventions near the same time. The rest is history.

In the same time frame, needing a job to pay the bills, I worked as a salesman for Wilson's Meat company for a few years. I did some student teaching for a while and pondered going back to finish what I started with med school.

I got fired from the meat salesman job due to me telling my boss at that time what I thought of him. smile He resented the fact that I had gotten an education and would make comments to me frequently. I did a good job and was the top sales rep at that time.

After being fired I was out of work for some time. My old boss that fired me I found, was not giving me a good reference from the years I worked for him. That explained why I was not being hired or getting any follow up calls for any of my other job interviews I was to find out over time.

Once we found out the reason I think my dad had a talk with this fella and straightened him out. smile I went on to purchase a home shopping service route and vehicle after I had a good interview. This old company was called the "Jewel Tea" company and later renamed to J.T's General Store.

I ran my route for 17 years which gave me freedom and a good income for all those years. It was the financing thru this business that paved the way to pay for my "lure business building capital" and my developing Wildlife Pest Control Services and ADC business.

I did some beaver control work for the Arkansas Game and Fish Dept. for 9 years along the Petite Jean river. Lots of beaver back then in the early 1990s.

The last 27 years have been fully consumed by our lure business and running a full time wildlife pest control business with employees. Its been a great life and wouldn't change much as I look back over my life. Each day is a new beginning and life is good for me. I am blessed.

Most of you know my wife is in my care daily, but we have made it work since our lure and wildlife pest control operation facility is near our home. I can't travel as I used to due to care giving duties, but I have accepted that situation and thankful to be able to do what I do each day.

Thats my life's work history.

Retired from USN in 1990 after 22 years, spent 8 years packing hunters and dudes into the local wilderness area for local outfitters, drove long haul truck for 6 years but spent more time gone from home than when in the Navy, officially declared myself retired so could enjoy the home life, took up trapping and became Wildlife Control Operator, now busier than a one legged man at a butt kicking contest, but able to enjoy home and actually adding to saving account.

Started out in the masonry trade. Tended mason and learned to lay brick, block and stone. After almost three years I went into the carpentry field as a laborer and worked my way up through the trade. Worked as a carpenter for a lot of years doing remodeling, building new homes and some light commercial work. Moved into the office end of the business doing estimating, working with vendors and clients, writing proposals, billing etc. Spent a lot of time going back to school and working full time, studying business and education.. Then I went into education. Taught Building Construction Technology for 23 years, teachers kids about the carpentry trade.

Worked on lots of projects including, countless sheds, 16 new homes, and 7 good sized cabins, one outdoor classroom nd one barn for a large 4 H learning center. Retired from that and tried running a greenhouse. Should have done a better job doing market research. Too much established completion and I was not smart enough to figure that out until I lost money.
Been working as a code enforcement officer and plumbing inspector since the summer of 2018. This job has been interesting and for the most part enjoyable.

Will be 71 in a few weeks.
I have trapped as time as allowed, and always loved camping and fishing, plus hunted when I had the chance. Move a lot slower thanI used to but still moving. Don't trap as much as I did in the 1970s or 1980s but still get a few out.
Mac
